When it comes to healthcare, especially at the allied health level, there are two things you absolutely must have: Technical competence and a good bedside manner. Yes, healthcare providers are experts, fully competent in their technical skills, and deeply knowledgeable about their fields. And bedside manner… I’ll say, it’s not just required in healthcare, but it applies to all leaders in all disciplines. Bedside manner is about being a good listener, showing respect, displaying empathy, and holding back judgment. It’s about making others feel heard, valued, and understood, especially during moments when they may feel vulnerable or uncertain. It’s the ability to offer reassurance, to make complex information digestible, and to provide a sense of calm amidst chaos. It’s about connecting with people on a human level—offering a kind word, a genuine smile, or even just the patience to listen a little longer. It’s interesting to think about the fact that bedside manner really transcends all sorts of leadership in all sorts of roles, careers, and industries. Doesn’t it?

“Dena did one of those tree-hugging talks” This comment made by a senior change leader about one of the talks I did at an international conference last year hit me hard! Not because of its outright rudeness or because I doubted the value of my talk (I didn’t), but because it mirrored the cynicism I experienced in my early years of leading change in healthcare😬 In those days it would happen: 🙏 whenever I spoke up about the changes needed in care and in our humanity in healthcare 👩⚕️ whenever I called for compassion and support for healthcare professionals during adverse incident investigations 🏥And whenever I highlighted the importance of improving patient experience, outcomes and quality of care When I presented on our quality outcomes at our executive meetings I always added positive stories of change. One CEO I reported to called it “warm and fuzzy”, devaluing not only that work but also discrediting all the hardcore efficiencies I had led that saved millions and improved healthcare systems. I could have retreated into becoming a hard-line leader that only cared about costs in order to prove my value as a leader. But I did not. It took huge courage for me to continue to speak out despite risk of being labelled "soft". As it turned out, that work became a key differentiator for us as a healthcare organisation with many first-in-the-industry achievements in measuring and improving quality of care🙌 Thankfully we are advancing how we measure value in healthcare yet I still see health professionals and healthcare leaders struggling to bring attention and resources to advancing the quality of care and to supporting the so-called “soft” elements of leadership. What’s your view on the importance of “soft” skills in healthcare leadership? Share in the comments below 📩 #healthprofessionals #healthcare #leadershipstories

If you're in the medical profession, you're already aware of how common partnerships are in your industry; the number of partners depends on the size of the medical centre and the willingness to take on risk. You and your partners feel the pressure to balance your clinical work with leading and managing the business. This in turn can lead to increased stress and disharmony. When feeling overburdened or unappreciated, it can be hard to recognise each other's value. To address these issues, you and your business partners will benefit from improving communication and maintaining a strong relationship. Understanding expectations, clarifying your business strategy, and moving forward as a supportive team will build a more positive environment. Taking time to align with partners can have significant financial and personal benefits for Australian medical practice owners.
