I am so excited hearing about Slava's impressions from the web summit after he's back. But I already know a huge number of success stories brought from #Ukraine to Europe this year. Despite the war and internal displacements between 2014 and 2022, as well as almost daily shelling, Ukrainian tech scene offers state of the art AI and ML-driven applications, solutions around health-tech and wellness, more sophisticated EdTech use cases, growing emphasis on sustainability and clean tech, expansion in fintech and neo-banking, rise of B2B SaaS platforms with global ambitions and much more. Moreover, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Alex Bornyakov, unveiled #CodeUA, a new national marketplace designed to connect global businesses with top Ukrainian tech companies. The platform seeks to redefine global collaboration with Ukraine's rapidly advancing IT sector, celebrated for its exceptional expertise and commitment to quality. Ukrainian government supports CodeUA and underscores the pivotal role of technology in sustaining economic resilience and bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities. In 2023, Ukraine's IT industry generated $12.7 billion for the national economy, affirming its essential contribution to the nation’s future. We had the privilege of hosting HE Viljar Lubi, Ambassador of Estonia on Wednesday evening, discussing Estonia’s experience developing digital government. This presents a significant challenge for the UK; where we have the advantage of more advanced technology and readily available solutions, we must also overcome political and bureaucratic hurdles by building trust. There is so much to learn from Estonia’s rapid success in this regard, which has allowed it to emerge from the challenging context of a post Soviet Socialist Republic to a world class destination for tech start-ups, lean government and a deeply rooted culture of innovation.

The other day, I attended the Tech Ecosystem Summit 2024 – an event dedicated to discussing the state, prospects and challenges of the development of the IT industry. The event included discussions and presentations on the following topics: - Support for domestic startups. - Opportunities for IT business growth in turbulent conditions. - Synergies of associations and ecosystem building in general and the formation of the Ukraine-EU technological ecosystem in particular. - Future innovations from the point of view of global leading companies. It is important that all representatives of the Ukrainian IT sector realize that the protection of intellectual property rights is an indispensable guarantee of the effectiveness of innovations and the success of IT business. In turn, the IP Office works tirelessly to build Ukraine's innovative infrastructure and spread knowledge about intellectual property among technological industry stakeholders. Together, we will make Ukrainian IT a competitive participant in the world market 🇺🇦

It's that time of year again that I have major FOMO about missing Slush, in my eyes still the best startup and tech conference I've ever attended. Should I make a wish for me to attend next year? Let me blow out some candles 🎂 One of the highlights was always coming back with the Atomico report on the State of European Tech, of which I always managed to get a paper copy. What I always appreciated was how it combined really good data with insights through a survey of European founders. This year is the 10th edition and although I've had to go through it on a screen (I doubt paper copies still exist), here are some of my takeaways: 🎂 Cake again first of all, as there is reason to celebrate: - The number of people working in tech has grown sevenfold in those 10 years, creating 2.5 million (!) jobs - Capital Investment in the past 10 years is ten times the size as the 10 years before that - Founders report much more support and a better perception of entrepreneurs in society - Over 300 unicorns and $1 trillion of exit value generated ⛰ There is more climbing to do to really fulfil the potential of European tech, with the number one challenge still being the funding gap. Once again, there isn't any progress in the gender funding gap noticeable, the U.S. still invests a lot more in startups and only 0.007% of EU pension funds invest in EU VCs. The gap is most noticeable in growing companies from late stage funding into unicorns, where Europe has gone backwards in the past 10 years. From 16% conversion in 2015 (450 late stage to 72 unicorns) to only 10% in 2024 (3400 late stage to 350 unicorns). It's clear that the tech sector is growing in Europe: more startups, more scale ups, more talent, more research ... but capital funding is just not accelerating at the same pace. The biggest gap in funding is particularly painful as it's in deeptech: those technologies of the future. Another barrier to growth: regulation and bureaucracy with in particular the GDPR regime and the E.U. AI Act seen as blockers to growth. It's crucial that the E.U. gets it act together and starts seeing regulation as a way to foster innovation, not work against it. There is much, much more to read through. This week, I had the opportunity to join 6️⃣ successful 🇪🇺 EU tech companies in #Warsaw for discussions with 🇵🇱 Polish officials. Together, we shared our vision for Europe’s 2030 digital policy and explored how to unlock the potential of EU tech both within Europe and globally. Key Takeaways: 🚀 A Strategy for EU Tech: It's crucial to #boost #European #tech, especially scale-ups, to enable them to compete and innovate on a global scale. 🛠️ Rigorous rule #enforcement: We proposed better cooperation among enforcement authorities, both within and between Member States. Each ministry could also appoint a tech officer or create a dedicated unit to form a task force, ensuring coordinated efforts and fostering innovation while minimising fragmentation. 🧩 Coherent regulatory landscape: Laws should fit together seamlessly, like puzzle pieces. European, national, and regional measures must complement each other, avoiding clashes or duplication. 🔍 Impact assessments: We emphasised the importance of comprehensive impact assessments to gauge the effects of regulatory measures on the market, especially for EU tech firms. 🎯Where EU rules are necessary, policymakers should focus on specific issues and be mindful of different tech business models. Solutions should be proportionate to the problems identified.
