COFFEE LOT DETAILS Country: Rwanda Terroir: Nyamagabe Fermentation: Classic Washed - Raised Beds Arabica cultivar: Red Bourbon Producer: Several small farmers Cup Notes:⁠ Cherry tomato, blueberry, almond, caramel Quality score: 87.50 THE STORY BEHIND The owner of Bwenda, Bernard Uwitije, is born and raised in southern Rwanda, in the district of Nyamagabe. Coming from a region where coffee was a dominant crop, he first entered the sector trading ordinary home processed coffee. However, as he learnt about the added value of coffee processed on a larger scale, he resolved to set up a proper and sustainable business in the coffee sector. It is following this resolve that he built his first wet mill near his hometown in 2016. He used the first year to learn all the details of operating a wet mill successfully, and he built a second washing station the following season, by which time he mastered processing large volumes without compromising quality. Bwenda was his third washing station, which he built in 2018 after realising a group of somewhat geographically isolated farmers did not have a closer washing station to process their cherries into high quality coffee. 2019 was the first season of operating Bwenda, when it only processed one container worth of cherries. The Circular Innovation and Sustainable Commodities Unit has been involved to provide technical and scientific to the Comune di Prato in implementing  a hop garden for the production of craft beer ‘made in Prato’. The cultivation of the hops will take place in the field at the disposal of the Higher Secondary Institute ‘Francesco Datini’, the transformation will be carried out by the ‘Birrificio I Due Mastri’ Brewery, already known for the use of hops cultivated in the Municipality of Prato. The transformation process will be supervised by the Circular Innovation and Sustainable Commodities Unit for its expertise on sustainable supply chains, in product and quality characterisation of agrifood production and the circular economy. The MoU is parto of Prato Circular City, the strategy the Municipality of Prato  intends to facilitate the city’s transformation towards a circular economy.
