In a word, I love this book and the progressive policy approaches it discusses that have been tried and tested by our Scandinavian friends. Yes, it's a decade old, but perhaps sadly, it's still very relevant to Australia, which at times seems to be about 10 years behind the rest of parts of the western world in our policy settings. (Looking at you #housing, #childcare, clean #energy, #justice, #futurefund, #tax and #economic policies!). We can do better to support vulnerable #Australians so that no one gets left behind.
Today was an exciting day because I met with Professor Takoa Kiba, who is visiting Melbourne from the Iwate Prefectural University, with his advanced proposal and draft to translate my 2014 book, Northern Lights, into the Japanese language for publication in Japan. We met at the Deakin University CBD facility and I will now discuss his proposal with my publisher as part of seeking to more widely disseminate these ideas for progressive policy change.

This stems from our belief that all the issues that bedevil our society require interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary solutions. In my essay this week, I offer Part 2 of a translation from "Outline History of Modern China" 《近代中国史纲》, the final work produced by my grandfather Kuo Ting-yee (郭廷以). Still taught as a textbook across much of Greater China, it was completed in 1974; he died the following year, in September 1975. Last week I published Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 14 ("Again, Revolution"). This next selection is of Sections 4 and 5 (as the third section focuses on economic development, and is a bit dry). This selection focuses on the May 4th Incident and its aftermath: the publication of a bewildering range of periodicals and magazines that introduced an equally bewildering range of new intellectual currents from the West — every flavor of socialism you can imagine, and then some. It looks at the emerging schism between Hu Shi 胡适 and Chen Duxiu 陈独秀, the two luminaries of the first half of the New Culture Movement, as they championed divergent approaches to enlightenment and national salvation. I hope you enjoy this offering. The link to the piece is in the comments.
