When we think of food, we think about the taste, the smells, the culture and how it was made. Rarely do we think first about how and where it was produced and by who! Food is one part of our urban ecosystem that is more emotional than functional. But ironically, when crisis strikes, its one of the first nut (pun intended!) that loosens due to its complicated supply chains and complexity within the ecosystem. Traditionally, farm productivity is measured by food output alone. But farmers are land managers, and the value of farming land goes far beyond crops – especially when it comes to water management. We need to redefine what it means to be productive.
