Is Sustainability A Game-Changer in Pharma and Biotech? What do you think?   On November 27, No deviation's team had the privilege of attending the ISPE Belgium event at GSK Wavre. This event brought together industry leaders, changemakers, and innovators to address one question:   How can we shape a sustainable future together in pharma? Quite a program, right?   Let me tell you, from the moment the doors opened, the energy was palpable. Really!   We had the chance to see and meet leaders like Maria Chiara Detragiache (Cefic), Simon Gilleman (Takeda), and Pieter-Jan Deschamps (GSK) who shared compelling insights on how innovation and sustainability can thrive together in pharma and biotech, as well as Ester Lovsin Barle (Takeda), Sarah Costers (CESPE), Kar Vrancken (Indaver), and David Vertongen (Pfizer), who added invaluable perspectives.   💡 Here's what we learned:   1️⃣ The future is renewable. Decarbonizing operations is no longer an option—it’s an imperative.   2️⃣ The future is circular. Circular economy principles are key—rethinking waste as a resource.   3️⃣ The future starts with us. Leadership and cross-industry collaboration accelerate change far beyond the pace of regulation.    We also had the chance to participate in a site visit and workshops that brought sustainability principles to life with actionable, real-world examples. So let’s not stop here. It’s time to take these learnings back to our teams and implement them where they matter most.   🌍 Remember: The health of our planet is directly tied to the health of our people. EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries and members had the pleasure to be part of an European Policy Centre Executive Breakfast dedicated to the EU Clean Industrial Deal. The meeting was wide-ranging in terms of technologies and sectors, trying to join the dots for Europe between climate goals and a prosperous EU. For Jean-Paul El Ahl and myself, ‘prosperity’ is the key, with prosperity of citizens as the KPI, so that they can take the journey towards a sustainable Europe without risk to access and affordability of essentials such as food, heating and healthcare. #Innovation is THE key to achieving this. Only through innovation do we create the productivity, employment and sector security needed for citizens to feel prosperous and walk the pathway of a sustainable transition. We need to champion the innovative technologies that deliver prosperity whatever the sector, and look to the incoming Commission and Parliament to help innovators deliver.

“People are deeply stuck in a trade-off mentality: growth versus green...” Can a company do well, despite pursuing sustainability? The better question might be: how can sustainability drive more growth! Very excited to see Novo Nordisk ranked #13 globally in TIME magazine’s 2025 sustainable growth index. Before it was in focus, sustainability has been at the core of Novo Nordisk (cited by the foundation over 100 years ago). And Novo Nordisk was the first pharma company to join RE100 in 2020 when our production became 100% sustainable. For the list, TIME and Statista created a new methodology to identify both outstanding financial and environmental performance. Companies had to show unusually small carbon footprints, low water consumption and waste production, and high green energy usage.
