Housing affordability is a top three issue for all age groups, and politicians listening to voters is a top two issue for each. 👂🏼🏡 Younger voters tended to prioritize crowded neighborhoods, earning enough to pay for non-housing needs, housing affordability, and K-12 education. Older voters prioritized abortion and women’s rights, air quality, partisan politics, and politicians listening to voters. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/geWJUWxJ

The Right to Housing is a protected Human Right. So why are many provinces failing to act? The only province in Canada that can actually legislate on Housing as a Right is Prince Edward Island, in its Tenancies Act. However, there is no method of enforcement, which seems to be an ongoing issue. The other important issue is what to do in the meantime; how do municipalities and provinces deal with encampments? The current way is to treat the encampments, and the people who are living there are by police enforcement; this is dehumanizing, and other solutions should be found. The Canadian Human Rights Council has some interesting ideas from the Federal Housing Advocate. https://lnkd.in/g9wHzDqt

Did you know that women with children, particularly single mothers with young children, often struggle to secure rental properties for their family. This is another way that the current housing crisis disproportionately affects women. Have you ever been discriminated against when seeking housing? share your experience (anonymously) in our 2024 Housing Survey at www.wrcbermuda.com.

🎁 #EmpoweringHolidayCountdown Continues: Safe & Stable Housing For All🎁 Everyone deserves a safe and stable place to call home. At the YWCA, we believe that housing is more than just a roof—it’s the foundation for everything else. When people have a stable place to live, they have the security to thrive, pursue their dreams, and give back to their communities. This holiday season, let's remember that housing isn’t just a luxury—it’s a right. It’s a core part of our mission to eliminate racism and empower women. By providing affordable housing and the support needed, we help women and families find the stability they need to succeed. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gVz6n9QQ Together, we can make a real difference. #EmpoweringHolidayCountdown #CommunitySupport #YWCA #OnAMission #HolidayWellness #EmpowermentFromWithin #SeasonOfGiving #TogetherWeRise #EquityNow

Today, on the anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 we reflect on the past and ponder an evolving future. Could you imagine being denied the opportunity to purchase a house simply because of who you are? Prior to the Fair Housing Act of 1968, this discrimination was a sad reality for many. Today, we celebrate National Fair Housing Month in honor of those who fought against institutionalized discrimination. Let's continue to strive for equality in housing and beyond. #FairHousingMonth #EqualityInHousing #FairHousingAct #HousingEquality #CivilRights #EqualOpportunity

“Here’s how. First, if people don’t fully understand the scope of an issue – such as institutional racism and how it relates to their professional work – they are less likely to change how they do their jobs. What Seattle officials have learned is that robust professional development trainings for employees create common understandings and shared knowledge. Second, developing a clear process to enact change makes it easier to have widespread application. A racial equity toolkit means that equity is not an afterthought. Instead, it is a central part of how all decisions are made in city government. Third, institutional change takes time and involves more than legal compliance. It is important to start small and see what works in the local context. Building a foundation for creating further change keeps efforts moving forward.”
In 2023, Seattle passed a citywide ordinance to address institutional racism, which states that all departments in city government are responsible for “implementing change toward ending institutional racism." The ordinance builds on decades of work to address the racial wealth and income gap and ensure more equitable access to housing, healthcare and educational opportunities--and puts the responsibility of working to end institutional racism as part of every city employee’s job, core to the functioning of municipal government: https://lnkd.in/gYaiWn4V #RacialEquity #AntiRacism #HealthInAllPolicy #UrbanPolicy

Housing discrimination is still on the rise. Today the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) released the 2024 Fair Housing Trends Report which chronicles important information about efforts to combat housing discrimination in the United States. The number of housing discrimination complaints peaked at a record high for the third straight year in a row. In 2023, 34,150 fair housing complaints were filed with local fair housing organizations, state and local FHAP agencies, HUD, or DOJ. There was also a steep increase in the number of harassment complaints - particularly for harassment based on color and race which skyrocketed by 471% and 115% respectively. Fifty-six years after passage of the Fair Housing Act, we still have not dismantled harmful systems that continue to perpetuate discrimination against women, people of color, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Fair housing groups, who are on the frontlines of the battle against housing discrimination, must receive more funding to handle increased caseloads and provide needed assistance to survivors of discrimination. But there's a way you can help too. Become a member of NFHA today and join the Fight For Fair Housing. 🤝 Housing Rights Review Panel: collaborate with us! The National Housing Council has announced a new review panel. We’re calling on community members to collaborate with CPJ in this important advocacy moment! To learn how you can collaborate with us for a fairer, more inclusive housing system, visit https://lnkd.in/diZHJ9kt. About the review panel: this panel will examine Canada’s failure to uphold the right to adequate housing for women, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people; highlight systemic barriers that prevent secure, safe housing; and explore federal policy solutions. CPJ wants to demonstrate that people and communities of faith are an engaged constituency and that we stand in solidarity with those disproportionately impacted by poverty and the housing crisis. You can collaborate by contributing to a CPJ submission or by making your own submission as an individual or organization. This is a pivotal moment in the fight for housing as a human right in Canada, and each of us has a role in making lasting change. #HousingRights #HousingJustice #SocialJustice #CPJ #EndHomelessness #Canada #RightToHousing #PublicJustice #cdnpoli #publicengagement #ally #allyship
