beautiful memories that made me wonder: what made us such a successful team back then?
There was passion for the cause everywhere. Nevertheless, I think that back then there was a lucky coincidence between authentic leadership and technical expertise of a 26 year old coach and, in multiple ways, a talented team.
Grateful that i could experience the following, in my mind, important actions in order to build a team:
𝟭. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲-𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: In our case it was the German championship title in 2014. We all knew that this title would bring us a big step closer to professional football.
𝟮. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 - 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁: Getting upset about the little things we do wrong to keep the winning streak going. Before every match we formed a circle and shouted “Can’t Stop” together. This reflected the shared ambition to never give up in the pursuit of winning and becoming better.
𝟯. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: We played a very aggressive and forward-oriented style of football for which guidelines such as: winning the ball early, looking forward first when getting the ball, „Steil-Klatsch“ or defending forward existed. Everyone knew that these principles always applied.
𝟰. 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀: We had very different personalities in our team, some of whom came from different cultures. Nevertheless, we created an intimacy for open and direct feedback where everyone felt picked up and knew where they stood. An attempt was made to find a framework for everyone to perform. This leads to a higher willingness to take risks and perform better if you know that mistakes can be made and you can move on from there.
𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀: We had very different player profiles in the team. Some types of players who benefited greatly from their focused and disciplined work ethic and which had a talent for tackling and others who were very talented on the ball and creative. Finding the right mix of these strengths to get the best out of the team was key.
