"The United States spends more on health care than any other high-income nation, yet we have the least to show for it — lower life expectancy, higher maternal and infant mortality, more chronic disease and disparities than our peers. Undoubtedly uninsurance, underinsurance, and affordability challenges are major root causes of this painful difference."- The Commonwealth Fund And for Latinos, we are disproportionately affected by a dysfunctional healthcare system that forces our community to go without necessary and sometimes life-saving care and medications that yields poorer health and quality of life, worst overall health outcomes, and sometimes crushing medical debt. We must continue to advocate for policies that remove barriers for our communities to access the care they need and protects and strengthens health care coverage gains made in recent years. The attached article offers some well-researched, enactable policy solutions. Will we finally act?

The shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has reignited public outcry over systemic issues in the U.S. healthcare system. While suspect Luigi Mangione criticized the insurance industry's practices, America’s lower life expectancy—77.5 years compared to 80 in other high-income countries—is driven by more complex factors, including gun violence, social determinants of health, and corporate policies prioritizing profit over public health. In reality, only 10-20% of health outcomes are attributable to health care. This event really highlights the pressing need for both healthcare reform and addressing the broader societal challenges impacting health outcomes. https://lnkd.in/g6SeYEVS

With rising health insurance costs, employers are turning to ICHRAs to manage expenses while offering valued benefits. These plans let companies make tax-free contributions for employees to buy individual coverage, limiting their financial risk. 💡 #HRA #ICHRA #EmployeeBenefits #HealthInsurance

Small employers are looking into all of the options when it comes to group health insurance. In this article, it discusses the option of an ICHRA or an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement. There are pros and cons to this arrangement and I have successfully set clients up with vendors who are fantastic as this model and make this a very viable solution. Pros: A lot of employees find it beneficial as they can pick which plan and or network they want and puts more control into their hands. Employers like it because they can set a dollar amount beforehand and administratively be more hands off and let vendors do the heavy lifting. Cons: When not using a vendor, there are tax implications to consider that can be complicated. This is just one of the many tools we use to drive down the costs for our clients. https://lnkd.in/gqq4_zFe

In 2009, Wendell Potter defected from Cigna to speak out about the ways health insurers were exploiting everyday people to increase profits. Somehow, nothing has changed. “Investor days” continue to be happy occasions for the shareholders, while everyday people pay more for less care and worse health outcomes. This topic isn’t new, but now more than ever we need to give insiders like Potter the megaphone (and protections) they need to bring the truth to the public. National health policy...a textbook example of the design thinking concept of a "wicked problem" (a problem that is chronically resistant to solutions). Every national health policy is a blend of push and pull, but there's a common theme to the most recent iterations: a guaranteed benefit floor, with the ability to augment coverage via private coverage (not unlike Medicare, supported by Medicare Plus coverage).
