Our latest blog post, written by Mike Urquhart, shares a letter Mike wrote for his late wife Lorraine about his experiences as a widower. In his letter, he shares 5 pieces of advice for individuals looking to support someone who has become widowed: 1. Spend time with them, just like you would have before they became widows 2. Invite them to learn fun things with you 3. Love them unconditionally 4. Keep them from harm (i.e. substance abuse, suicide, etc.) 5. And the rest they’ll figure out on their own Read Mike’s full advice and letter by visiting https://hubs.ly/Q02v6bRz0 #lovedone #honouringalovedone #lettertoalovedone #caregiver #cancer #healthstory #mentalhealth #digitalhealth #support

We understand that breast cancer treatment can affect your mental well-being because it is such a difficult process to go through. We often hear patients say that it's good to learn to share things with others, especially your loved ones as they will want to help, so let them. It's important to take one step and each day at a time, do not think too far ahead - every day is an achievement. Here are just a few more gentle reminders from one friend to another. 1. Accept help when it is offered. There is no reward for doing it alone and people will want to help, whether that’s childcare, housework or shopping perhaps. 2. Never be afraid to say you need to rest, this is part of the healing process. Treatment is very tiring so do not fight against it. 3. Find a good box set or TV series to binge-watch. Netflix is great for this. 4. Have the odd treat here and there; allow yourself a small drink, even if it is only a few sips. And when you can, take little walks. Exercise is important; if you can only do small amounts that’s ok and if you can’t manage it one day, try again the next. 5. Take little trips to the seaside and breathe in the air. Even if you don’t get out of the car it’s good to remind ourselves of our beautiful surroundings. Kesem’s support for children grows, adapts, and endures - at diagnosis, during treatment, in remission, after a recurrence, and beyond - showing children that they don’t have to go through these experiences alone, no matter who they are and no matter what happens. 💚 We know that this type of peer-to-peer support can be powerful and transformative for children, not only in how they cope with a parent’s cancer but also in how they view themselves and navigate the world, as parents and children consistently report more positive mental health outcomes after Kesem. You can help us create more life-changing experiences for children facing a parent's cancer, at absolutely no cost to families served. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month As we come together this month to raise awareness about breast cancer, it’s important to recognize the emotional and mental toll that a diagnosis can bring. From the shock of hearing the news to navigating treatment, survivors and their loved ones often experience a range of emotions—fear, anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty. At Behavioral Health Advocacy Services, we know that mental health support is a critical part of healing and thriving through breast cancer. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s okay to seek help. Counseling, support groups, and mindfulness practices can provide a safe space to process your emotions and build resilience during this challenging time. You are stronger than you know, and you don’t have to face this alone. Let’s honor the fighters, survivors, and those we’ve lost by advocating for both physical and emotional health. Childhood trauma isn’t something you just overcome as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress from abuse, neglect, and parental struggles with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain across a lifetime. This stress also increases the risk of developing heart disease and lung cancer. However, it is important to acknowledge ACEs are not intended to be diagnostic. Other factors, such as community support and interventions, can potentially mitigate these risks and must be considered. Individuals are more than their ACE scores.
