Abdirahman carries a lot of responsibility on his young shoulders. At just 24 he is the breadwinner for his 10 siblings, following the death of their parents. Since receiving a tuc-tuc from a Zamzam programme, he's been able to earn an income as a taxi driver that means he can provide for his younger brothers and sisters - while also pursuing his own goals with confidence and security. Nearly one third of Somali households support at least one orphan or foster child like Abdirahman's younger siblings. Every year Zamzam provides thousands of orphaned children with financial sponsorship, education and healthcare. We also help their guardians, like Abdirahman, to establish small businesses and build a brighter future, despite their tragic family losses. It is unacceptable that any child should contend with the terror that those in Gaza are living through. Dodging bombs and bullets, fleeing through streets littered with debris and corpses, being forced to sleep in the open air and going without the basic food and clean water they need to survive. Children in Gaza are living through a period of mass-scale horror and grief without parallel in modern times. They were already navigating unimaginable distress following 16 years of blockade and successive escalations in violence. Save the Children is calling for an immediate, definitive ceasefire to protect the lives of children in the region as well as effective implementation of the provisional measures from the International Court of Justice. We are calling on the Government of Israel to allow the unfettered flow of aid and the resumption of entry of commercial goods into Gaza to prevent more children dying of starvation and disease. Save the Children is also calling for all donor governments to immediately resume and scale up funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), on which the aid response in Gaza depends. Here in Canada, we are asking our government to stop the transfer of weapons and sale of arms to Israel. Please join us in urging MPs to do what is right. What’s your 5-9 after your 9-5? What’s that one thing that you give your absolute best when you get back from your day job? For me, it’s Period Padi, an NGO I started to eradicate period poverty in Nigeria, one girl at a time. In March, we had our first retreat, giving out 100 free sanitary pads. This month, we want to give out 300. We have one outreach every quarter and the goal is to reach at least 1,000 girls before the year runs out. So what’s your 5-9 after your 9-5?

Bright Light Projects Village Savings and Loan Program (VLSA) Opening its first Box at Rosint Community in Bombali District Sierra Leone. The VSLA Program is laying the foundation for basic financial literacy for poor rural communities often disconnected from mainstream financial service institutions. The majority of these women are widows due to the last Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014. This has been a 12-month journey educating rural women on savings, manual bookkeeping, accessing loans for basic family needs, starting a small business, and ploughing back those profits for a better harvest. The Box was broken and distributed today and it is amazing how much the woman has been able to save. They will now use this money to sustain their children’s academics and their welfare. VSLA is a sustainable exit strategy by BLP on its Mend the Gap Schooling Program for Vulnerable Ebola orphans and Survivors since 2016 in Sierra Leone. #savings #financialliteracy #money #support #africa #ruralwomen #communitydevelopment #SierraLeone #SDGs United Nations Volunteers United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

"As witnessed by our founder, Haril, while living in Uganda as a young man, state-run orphanages often exploit children, attracting Western aid by claiming their residents are orphans, when in fact 80% of them are not. It was this simple deception to channel continuous international funding that drove Haril to want better outcomes for Ugandan children and their families. This poignant observation of the traditional aid model’s shortcomings were catalysts for Haril and Andrea’s commitment to championing community independence over aid dependency." **Click the link to read the full article!** https://lnkd.in/g9ahSFiG
