What now? Before the wave of layoffs dominated discussions, we were driven by ambitious hiring goals and budgets set from the top. Our strategy revolved around showcasing growth to investors through expanding our workforce. As hiring managers, we focused solely on increasing headcount without fully considering the long-term consequences. Remember Snapchat? They had a bunch of people working on building buttons. Turns out, growth isn't just about how many people you have on your team. Investors figured that out too. What now? I think its a great idea to focus on generalist, not specialized talent. How do you define trust? Who do you trust most at work? What breaks down trust? When I work with groups and have them define trust, I typically hear, "I trust my peer will get the work done." Trust is more then getting the work done. And how we can tap into a trusting team of peers goes deeper then day-to-day tasks. Listen to Andrew Osterday from LOCAL - The Change Marketing Company explain the importance of trust amongst peers and how this can lead to a successful tech implementation.
When it comes to tech adoption, here’s a key insight: It’s often not leadership that will get people on board with the latest tool or system. This is especially true in times of upheaval, like layoffs or significant changes that may strain trust in leadership. People trust people—not brands. They look to each other for guidance, not the CEO or a polished corporate message. So, if you're rolling out new tech, consider who is delivering the message, not just what’s being said. Who do employees trust? Peers. The colleague in the next cubicle or the one sitting beside them in the truck. These are the influencers who hold sway over their coworkers and can make the new technology feel “safe to try”. Empowering a network of champions within the organization—a “change network”—is the most effective way to drive real adoption.
