1st May, Labours Day: the ITUC Global Rights Index already in 2023, suggested that the very pillars of democracy are facing severe threats. The vitality of any democracy is intricately tied to the preservation of workers' rights. As one diminishes, so does the other. In many countries low and high income, of varying economic statuses, a profound cost-of-living crisis, fueled by corporate interests, has led to unprecedented inflation. Consequently, governments have increasingly restricted workers' abilities to collectively negotiate fair wages and exercise their right to strike.77% of countries excluded working people from the right to establish or join a trade union. Migrant, domestic and temporary workers, those in the informal economy, platform workers and workers in Special Economic Zones were denied the right to freedom of association. The right to free speech and assembly was restricted in 42% of countries, often resulting in protesting workers facing police brutality. No country in the world affords women the same opportunities as men in the workforce, according to a new report from the World Bank, which found the global gender gap was far wider than previously thought.
If we want to save democracy we need to fight inequality and guarantee everyones rights.
