We are officially a month into 2025, y’all. There’s something about the turning of a new calendar year that invites a renewed spirit of innovation and rigor in our schools! Right now, I’m feeling inspired in how we are reimagining what it means to provide a high-quality education for every single student beyond the traditional scope of what school can look like. In particular, I’m feeling inspired by our dear partners at Transcend, including #NACSACon24 keynote speaker and Transcend Co-Founder and Co-CEO Aylon Samouha’s book, “Extraordinary Learning for All: How Communities Design Schools Where Everyone Thrives.” One of the big ideas the book calls out is that school has a design, and it can be redesigned. As leaders in the charter school space and in the charter school authorizing space specifically, I ask you: how can we break away from the typical school design to provide communities what they actually need without sacrificing accountability or innovation? Across the country we see the struggle to meet the demands of teacher shortages. This guidance from the U.S. Department of Education is a practical approach to use various funding sources, alongside of Title II Part A, to not only recruit and retain a diverse educator workforce, but to focus on ensuring it leads to improved student outcomes.
Two incredible resources released today on supporting the teacher workforce from U.S. Department of Education with tactical and practical guidance about supporting this work through various funding streams and my two fav words - blending and braiding! Thanks to the partners within The Pathways Alliance who participated in many regional convenings that informed this work. Also, a special shoutout to specific callouts for Title funds to support #edtech professional development to close the digital design and digital use divides outlined in the National Education Technology Plan. Congrats to the all star team who led this work Nikki Churchwell, Mary C. Wall, Brenda Calderon, Ph.D., Victoria Hammer and many others. I see you also Maureen Tracey-Mooney! Two resources: The ESEA Title II, Part A Strategic Use of Funds non-regulatory guidance highlights how these funds can help implement strategic policies to address educator shortages and provide educators and students with what they need to thrive. This includes using these funds to support strategies related to improving compensation and working conditions, expanding pathways into the profession, providing induction and professional learning, offering educator leadership and career advancement opportunities, and promoting educator diversity. The Supporting a Diverse Educator Workforce to Strengthen Teaching and Learning non-regulatory guidance highlights the benefits of a diverse educator workforce for all students, and particularly students of color; describes strategies for States and LEAs can take support to support their educator workforce; and highlights Federal funds available to support these efforts. https://lnkd.in/eywd8U9V

Recently, eSchool News tapped education experts to share where they believe the future of #edtech is headed. Rebecca Kockler, Executive Director for Reading Reimagined, an Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) program, was among the experts invited to share their insights. Kockler anticipates, “We will see a greater push to support teachers with solutions to help older K-12 students with reading. In 2025, we will see a greater focus on providing research-backed solutions to support upper elementary and middle school students with reading.” All students have the potential to be confident, successful readers–with the right support. Reading Reimagined and its partners are taking a crucial first step to understand the barriers keeping older students from comprehending grade-level texts and providing educators with resources that help learners on their journey to becoming proficient readers. https://lnkd.in/e3MCFCHU
