Want to hire a Field Service Engineer who can make an impact from day one? Here’s how to spot the qualities that matter most... 👀 👇 A great Field Service Engineer does more than just repair equipment—they’re an extension of your team, especially in healthcare settings where every second counts. Here’s what I look for when helping my clients hire candidates who can make a real difference: 1. Calm Under Pressure In high-stakes situations, where lives can be impacted by equipment performance, a cool-headed engineer is essential. Look for candidates who have proven experience staying composed under pressure—they should be able to keep their focus on solutions, no matter the stress level. 2. Excellent Communication Skills Field Service Engineers need to connect and communicate effectively with healthcare professionals who may be under immense pressure. Candidates with clear, respectful communication styles help keep situations calm and can relay technical information in a way that is reassuring and actionable for healthcare staff. 3. Problem-Solving Mindset Hiring someone who can think on their feet is key. Ask candidates about a time they faced an unexpected challenge in the field. Their answer will give you insight into their approach to troubleshooting and whether they take ownership of solutions, especially in ‘patient-on-the-table’ scenarios. 4. Dedication to Patient Care and Impact When hiring, seek candidates who are personally motivated to make a difference. One way to gauge this is by asking: “Can you tell me about a time when you went above and beyond to support a surgeon or patient?” Candidates driven by impact will often share stories that reflect their commitment and show how they approach challenging situations with a patient-centered mindset. This kind of dedication leads to greater reliability and stronger, lasting relationships with your team and with your clients. Hiring with these qualities in mind helps ensure your new Field Service Engineer isn’t just capable, but ready to make a meaningful impact from day one. Need help finding someone who fits the bill? An interesting discussion with an expanding client this morning with upcoming vacancies later this year. They're winning business not just because of their products but because of their well regarded, highly trained service engineer team who are all based regionally to suit customer locations. They recently had conversation with a competitor who said they must be undercutting everyone. The competitor is a distributor with no significant service team. The client response "would you buy a brand new expensive car if there was nobody in the country to service it?" In 2024 it seems ridiculous that someone thinks they can sell capex equipment to hospitals without an excellent service team to support it. Whatever business you're in, service and back-up is essential. Hence why our clients keep returning to us whenever they've a vacancy. #hiring #headhunters #lifesciences #medicalproducts #vacancies

True sales engineers are a rare breed. Sometimes difficult to find when you're looking for... Technical Foundation: -Engineering degree preferred -Deep product knowledge -Process understanding -Application expertise -Industry certifications PLUS Sales DNA: -Relationship building -Project management -Solution selling -Territory development -Customer-facing skills Most pure engineers love the technical... but avoid the sales aspects. Most sales people love selling... but lack the true technical depth. The combination of technical expertise AND sales ability makes this talent pool limited. More so if looking for industry specific. The good news is that even with a limited candidate pool, you can still find sales engineers who are open to a new opportunity. But, they probably are not "actively" looking. They likely are not browsing job boards. They're busy in their current role. This means having to reach out to them and starting a conversation. That's how you'll find the right fit within your hiring timeline.
