My Song of the Month! for February, 2010’s “Bittersweet,” broke a 12-year dry spell in my songwriting. What roused the songwriter in me again was Day for Night, the acoustic duo comprising Gretchen Schaefer and me. Once we decided to focus on antique country music, my songwriting path became clear. And what better topic for an old-country song than an invasive plant as a metaphor for love gone wrong? https://lnkd.in/dtDRdgNk

The most important rule for writing: There is no set rule. Before ChatGPT became such a buzzword, I sometimes experimented with another tool, Hemingway Editor, to help edit my writing. It gives you a result very like the image below — it classifies your sentences based on length, marks out instances of active and passive voice and complicated sentence structures, and deems the piece of text difficult or easy to read. I often ended up with a low readability score. My writing was 'very difficult to read'. The tool can be reasonably useful when the requirement is for the text to be quick, to-the-point and factual, and of course to correct small mistakes and typos. But it felt like no substitute to gauge the quality of writing, the way it engages the reader, the cadence and feel of the text. The very sentences it asked me to change because they were too long were often what I felt were the nicest, the ones I enjoyed writing. So for the articles I really put my heart into, I made sure to change using these tools. Even as I type this somewhat mundane post, I am bombarded with AI suggestions on rewriting this post differently. Yes active voice is good, short sentences are good, there's no need to use a fancy word when you can use a simpler word—I have preached a lot of this myself. But, these rules don't always apply. Write from your heart too. #WritingTips #WritingCommunity #NoRules #CreativeWriting #WriteFromTheHeart #WritingProcess #HemingwayEditor #AIWriting #AuthenticWriting #WritingJourney #Storytelling #WritingFreedom #EngageYourReaders PS: The primary purpose I use ChatGPT for to generate hashtags like the above for posts , and when I put in this particular text in the Hemingway Desktop app and got a rare instance of a score of 9- marked as 'good'.

Such good guidance for written communication, the most common medium. It seems easy, right? Writing is something we learned to do a long time ago. But if you're trying to convey something you want to be remembered, noticed, then keeping the words light, maybe even musical, can make sure people are more willing to engage and absorb your message. You chose every word for a reason. Make sure they all get read.

It's cover letter season. It's a lot. For you it's a lot; and sometimes, it's a lot for me. Here's why. So it is with joy and relief that Amy Cuddy has shared Susan Cain's illustration of how sentences tend to a reader's experience. Read this. Understand this. Then, when you have activated your writing voice, #GPLLM and #LLM students, you will have built trust with me, your reader, and position yourself to write long, long, long sentences about your truly breathtaking work. Give your reader breath. #writingtips #coverletters #lawstudents #NCA #ITL
