Did you know palliative care services can be helpful at all stages for people living with metastatic breast? Contrary to what many people think palliative care is not only for end-of-life care. In reality, palliative care provides help to people living with an incurable illness – such as metastatic breast cancer – so that they can live as fully and comfortably as possible. Palliative care means that you, your family and carers can get practical, emotional, spiritual and physical support. National Palliative Care Week is a great opportunity to have conversations and dispel myths about palliative care. For people living with metastatic breast cancer, palliative care can help over many years. For some this is continual, and others may dip in and out as needed. We recently spoke to leading OB-GYN Dr. Kiarra King, MD, FACOG, who has been a speaker at several OMNoire Retreats to get tips on how best to advocate for ourselves, listen to our bodies, and more. #CervicalHealth #PreventiveCare 5 Tips from Dr. Kiarra King on how to take charge of your health: - Know that you have a voice and use it. Your relationship with your physician should be a partnership. - Do your research and ask questions. Write them down before your appointment as they come to you. Ask as many questions you need to feel comfortable. - Bring a trusted friend or family member with you to your appointments or have them on the phone if needed. Sometimes they may sense things we don't. - Listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right or make sense to you, you should always seek out a second opinion. - Stay up to date with your annual gynecologic exams and routine cervical cancer screenings aka Pap smears. Cervical cancer is a slow moving and treatable disease but you have to catch it early enough to increase your chances for survival. Let's raise awareness about preventive healthcare! Save post for future reference!
