Empowering communities is key to driving sustainable waste management practices. In the upcoming Africa Waste is Wealth Conference, we'll be diving into how community engagement can transform waste management and create lasting impact. ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna partner, Faith Macharia, will moderate a panel session on 8 October, from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM (EAT), titled Exploring "Opportunities for Community Engagement in Integrated Waste Management". This session highlights the critical role of residents and waste pickers in addressing local waste challenges, and how building strong relationships within communities can pave the way for sustainable practices. While technology enhances communication and data sharing, true progress lies in empowering people on the ground. We'll also explore strategies to advocate for waste pickers' rights and develop integrated waste management approaches that not only protect the environment but also support local livelihoods. The session will kick off with a case study by Systemiq Ltd. on their Project STOP in Indonesia, presented by: • Adam Hidana Yudo Saputro – Senior Officer, Systemiq • Ronny Laudien – Senior Manager, Accenture Song Joining the panel will be: Hon. Today, on November 22nd the kenya waste recyclers association (KAWR) and ANDE East Africa hosted a 2nd convening for the multisectoral Policy Working Group on Circular Economy. This group will work with key stakeholders to address policy challenges in the waste sector, aiming to reduce barriers and increase incentives for enterprises to formalize and attract financing. The initiative will focus on providing recommendations for fiscal incentives, tracking investment contributions, and developing comprehensive waste and resource management strategies. Additionally, it will act as an ambassador for circular practices, sharing best practices and fostering community engagement. We look forward to advancing Kenya's waste reduction and circular economy initiatives through this collaborative effort. 🌍♻️ #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #WasteManagement #Kenya #GreenEconomy Rosemary Amondi Richard Kainika Annelies Withofs Patrick Obonyo Msc, MBA oscar ebalu joyce Klu Sarah Njau Dr. Eng. 🌱 How South African Municipalities Can Transform #OrganicWaste into Valuable Resources! South Africa’s municipalities have a pivotal opportunity to rethink organic waste management. By converting food waste, garden scraps, and other organic materials into compost, biogas, and other resources, municipalities can reduce landfill impact, create jobs, and support local economies. As Mpendulo Ginindza, Past President of the IWMSA - Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa, puts it: "When we view organic waste as a resource, we not only reduce environmental impact but also unlock economic and social benefits that strengthen our communities." Explore how innovative approaches are helping municipalities achieve greener, more sustainable futures. ♻️💡 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dNfjbe_F

I am happy to announce the publication of my latest research paper titled, "Towards Sustainable Solid Waste Management Systems: Empirical Evidence from Northern Malawi," in Environmental Health Insights. This study explores the pressing issue of solid waste management in Mzuzu City, Malawi, highlighting both the challenges and potential solutions for creating a more sustainable waste management system. Through a mixed methods approach, we gathered comprehensive data from 400 respondents and proposed strategies that can help transition towards a circular economy. Key findings include: · The critical role of public and private sector collaboration in waste management. · The need for enhanced recycling infrastructure and public awareness campaigns. · Recommendations for government-led initiatives and public-private partnerships to improve waste management practices. I am immensely grateful to my co-authors Moses MN Chitete, Bernard CG Kamanga, Chitsanzo Damazio, Yamikani Yafeti, and Mary Sibande for their invaluable contributions and dedication to this research. Let's work together to create sustainable and effective waste management solutions for a cleaner, greener future! #Sustainability #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #EnvironmentalResearch #Malawi

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Circular Economy for the Waste Sector in South Africa - offered by the United Nations Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC:Learn). As South Africa faces increasing pressure to address waste management, resource scarcity, and climate change, the circular economy offers a sustainable solution. This approach reimagines traditional linear processes by focusing on reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling resources - closing the loop in production cycles. Key industries such as manufacturing, construction, and agriculture are already exploring circular models to enhance efficiency, cut emissions, and drive economic growth. With government policies like the National Waste Management Strategy and businesses taking the lead in innovative waste-to-value solutions, South Africa is on the path toward a more sustainable future. #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #CaptiveCarbon #CaptivePower #UNCClearn #Unitar #DFFE #SouthAfrica #SwitchAfricaGreen

With funding from our partners, *We Clean We Green* is implementing a pilot project on Zero Waste Model in Lilongwe City, Malawi 🇲🇼 Africa. The grant comes in after I, Successfully completed the *Zero Waste Course* at Zero Waste Academy in Tanzania 🇹🇿 in 2023. It was great to be amongst the best candidates..... this comes from the background and experience on Waste management activities in Malawi. alongside over 320 young Volunteers on my back fighting #plasticpollution The project promotes Waste segregation at source, and aims at reducing the impacts of unsegregated wastes that goes to the landfills or dumpsites while Creating circular economy through a number of activities at the Material Recovery facility and reducing the amount of #GHG like methane etc.... Empowering, Promoting and respecting the values of waste Pickers is part of the Systems approach... The zero waste approach seeks to maximize recycling, minimize waste, reduce consumption and ensures that products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into nature or the marketplace. #Refuse #reduce #reuse #recycle #repurpose etc ...... To work hand in hand with other stake holders in the area, youth groups, and also the Lilongwe City *Municipality*. We are therefore seeking for qualified candidates to fill positions of #temporary field Enumerators for Zero Waste community household survey. #ZeroWaste #zerowastecities #zerowasteliving #wastemanagement The Social Change Agency UMI Fund Clean Air Fund GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) Mario Passoni Simon Wilcox John Leary Youth Climate Justice Fund Zero Waste Europe
