Today marks the 93rd anniversary of the September 18 Incident, a pivotal moment in Chinese history that sparked the beginning of Japan's invasion of China in 1931. This false-flag operation, carried out by Japanese soldiers, led to the occupation of Manchuria and ultimately the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. As we reflect on this somber chapter, it is crucial to remember the sacrifices made by the Chinese people during this tumultuous period. The resilience and courage displayed in the face of adversity are a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Across China, commemorative ceremonies are held to honor the memory of those who suffered. In Shenyang, the 9.18 Historical Museum serves as a poignant reminder of the past, with a bell tolling 14 times to symbolize the 14 years of resistance against Japanese aggression. Similar events took place in other cities within Liaoning and nearby provinces, bringing together government officials and citizens to reflect on the importance of remembering history and cherishing peace. The September 18 Incident serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of national sovereignty, identity, and historical memory. As we move forward, it is essential to learn from the past and work towards a future where such atrocities are never repeated. Let us take this opportunity to reflect on the lessons of history and renew our commitment to fostering a peaceful and just world. By remembering the sacrifices of the past, we honor the resilience of the human spirit and work towards a brighter tomorrow. #September18Incident #HistoricalMemory #NationalSovereignty #PeaceAndJustice #Resilience 分享
https://lnkd.in/ew2QCvzx There are events which shape us as individuals which we can recall and there are those which we didn’t personally experience but nonetheless have a profound impact on us. With this in mind I wanted to highlight the amazing work of Fang Li, a Chinese film director, who released a documentary film yesterday in China that will shortly be available elsewhere in the world called “The Sinking of The Lisbon Maru”. This film release is the culmination of 8 years work focused on revealing the story behind the sinking of the Japanese war ship “The Lisbon Maru”. The trailer for this film is attached to this post. The reason that this film is significant to my family and myself is that my grandfather Christos Pavlou was a British Royal Scots soldier on board The Lisbon Maru when this incident occurred. The Sinking of The Lisbon Maru film unveils the long-buried truth of the 1942 sinking of the "Lisbon Maru," an armed Japanese cargo ship that participated in World War II. In October 1942, this vessel transported more than 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) from Hong Kong towards Japan, without bearing a sign indicating it was carrying POWs. This was in violation of the Geneva Convention. After being struck by a torpedo from a nearby US submarine, Japanese soldiers, instead of trying to save the POWs, battened them down below deck, left them to drown, and even shot at them, leading to the deaths of 828 prisoners. This story has been left untold for 80 years. For context, those who perished on The Lisbon Maru amounted to over half of those who died on The Titanic when that ship sank. When the ship went down off the coast of East China's Zhejiang Province, 384 POWs were fortunately rescued by local Chinese fishermen, who pulled them from the water at risk of their own life before they were eventually recaptured by the Japanese after a day of freedom on nearby Chinese islands. To create this film Fang's team searched for the wreckage of the ship and held interviews with families of the soldiers on board in order to uncover the full details of this tragedy. The numerous face to face interviews, together with the historical scene animations in the documentary, help shed a light on a forgotten chapter in history. “We not only finished a film but also guarded a history," said Fang. "This cruel historical event has been buried under the sea and denied by the Japanese military for 82 years, and I hope that together we can share it with the world." This post is to highlight the fantastic work of Fang Li in bringing this tragic WW2 incident to life so that it isn’t forgotten. It is also to honour my grandad Christos (who I am named after). If he hadn’t made it off the ship (with the assistance of the Chinese fishermen) and then hung in there as a POW in Japan for 3 years then I wouldn’t be around today to share this story with you all. #lisbonmaru

EN DIVAGATION A film by Dorcas Mulamba SYNOPSIS “In a family where financial crisis reigns on all levels. Merveille is counting on her boyfriend's promise to have a trendy teenage birthday day. The parents, for their part, argue about their daughter's future under the watchful eye of the youngest." Statement From The Director I wrote this little story firstly to free myself, to not keep to myself this impression of seeing some things that are wrong so as not to just keep silent as always. I wanted to write it in the form of a photo, a portrait, a fact posed so that we look at with another eye what we experience in our homes, what we do with our young daughters, what We ourselves, young girls, make use of this potential to be a woman that we possess. Biographie de la réalisatrice Dorcas Malamba is a director and videographer. Trained and monitored by Kabako Studios. She participated in several training workshops organized at Studios Kabako. She participated in the production of several collective short films, such as Papa Amboko (2018) and See you tomorrow? (2019). The same year, she was assistant director for the medium-length film Number 48 by Faustin Linyekula, thus collaborating with the young Portuguese director Miguel Munha.“ En divagation…” is his first short film. #IshangoEncounter #KuMILIKI #Belonging #Films #Yoleafrica #Ecologie_Ancestrale #Alkebu_films_production #ArtActivism #Transforms #Ejo_Lobi #Goma #Rdcongo

Attending the event in Lagos was a privilege, and I'm grateful to have been a part of such a remarkable story. This true story reinforced my strong belief that In-Country Value (ICV) and Local Content must be deliberate, focusing on long-term strategies and building resilience. It's essential to adopt a lifecycle approach to achieve these goals. The video is worth watching, and I'd be grateful for your thoughts. #ICV #LocalContent #BuildingCapabilities #Resilience #LongTermStrategy

In the matter at hand regarding the organization of an investment forum versus the production of a movie aimed at drawing investors, it is imperative to assess the core objectives and the underlying framework of both approaches. While a movie serves as a creative and compelling tool in the realm of entertainment, it is not traditionally viewed as an informative medium for serious investors, especially in sectors that require a robust risk assessment. The audience for a movie differs significantly from those who attend investment forums. Investors, by their nature, seek environments where empirical data, feasibility studies, and risk management frameworks are presented before them. In an investment forum, the focus is on the dissemination of vital economic data, industry insights, and structured discussions around risk and return. Without these key elements, even the most creatively produced film may fall short of delivering the strategic and technical information investors rely upon to make informed decisions. Further, the question of whether investors would choose to engage with a movie as an investment vehicle is one of genuine concern. Films may attract emotional responses or capture attention momentarily; however, their efficacy as a tool for securing foreign direct investment (FDI) or long-term commitments to the Maldives' economic growth is uncertain. The nature of such investments demands more than creative allure—it demands a comprehensive understanding of risk, opportunity, and financial forecasting, which is better served in a formalized investment forum. Thus, the path forward should be one of cautious deliberation, ensuring that any creative tool deployed in this context aligns with the investors' needs for thorough analysis and strategic guidance. Without these critical components, the success of such an endeavor remains highly questionable.
Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has revealed that efforts are underway to collaborate with a Hollywood studio to produce a film highlighting the Maldives, aiming to boost investment opportunities in the country. Read More: https://lnkd.in/gdzijA2J
