Texas Instruments Expands GaN Production in #Japan The #manufacturing sector is investing in sophisticated technologies and streamlining processes to satisfy the increasing needs of the power electronics sector. Strategically, Texas Instruments (TI) has started producing #GaN semiconductors in its Aizu factory in Japan, therefore greatly increasing its capability for in-house GaN manufacture. By combining the Aizu plant with its current Dallas, Texas production line, TI intends to increase its GaN output even more, hence improving its general capacity in this important market. While clean #electricity generation points clearly toward renewable sources, the other end of the lever—efficient energy consumption—will be equally critical to meet decarbonization goals. The latter challenge, the focus of this article, has been successfully managed by silicon-based power semiconductors over the past several decades. Recently Power Integrations announced an agreement to acquire the assets of Odyssey Semiconductors, the latest and interesting development in the power GaN space. In the release, the company announced its intent to leverage the experience of the Odyssey team in developing high-current vertical GaN to develop high-current and high-voltage power GaN to compete with SiC in high-power applications. It is well known that Power Integrations has been an industry pioneer in commercializing high-voltage GaN power devices, which very well complements with what the Odyssey’s vertical GaN technology wanted to achieve. We see this as a positive development that will accelerate the #power #GaN market growth. Recently we saw #vertical #GaN companies finding hard to generate commercial success. However, Frost & Sullivan's interaction with market participants found that Vertical GaN is not a closed topic, but certainly a technology that requires more research and investments to put GaN in the high-voltage market segments. Vertical GaN requires persistent research efforts, but also different technology and commercialization strategies and partnerships. We wish Power Integrations all the best in this transaction. The new Infineon Technologies CoolSiC™ MOSFET 650 V and 1200 V Generation 2 improve MOSFET key performance figures such as stored energies and charges by up to 20% compared to the previous generation without compromising quality and reliability levels leading to higher overall energy efficiency and further contributing to #decarbonization. *DOE 1000x POWER SAVING ROADMAP* I'm exited to share that the U.S. is leading the way in future chip technology. In addition to the many DOC CHIPS Act programs and DOD's MEC, DOE is stepping in. I had the pleasure to work with a dedicated team to supported and build an initial roadmap called EES2 (Energy Efficiency Scaling 20 years) released recently. Now, DOE is soliciting inputs (RFI) for a program. The Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI) joined EES2 in signing a pledge in exploring technologies in doubling energy efficiency every other year to achieve a 1000x reduction in 20 years.
