Today I had the honor and privilege to host the panel discussion on "Counter-Hegemonic Approach to International Law by Global South-East(ern Europe): between Ukraine and Gaza Strip" within the framework of an academic conference "International Law - Its Heritage as a Response to Modern Problems" held in the premises of Wydział Prawa i Administracji Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Many thanks to the great speakers participating in this panel - Prof. Patrycja Grzebyk, Prof. Marek Wasiński and Dr. Patryk I. Labuda - for their extremely interesting remarks on different approaches to international law existing in the global legal discourse. Undoubtedly, the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing armed conflict in Gaza, alongside, for instance, the role of International Criminal Court in the fight against the impunity of the most responsible wrongdoers, are perceived non-identically in different parts of the world. Nonetheless, this issue still remains under-researched by the community of legal scholars, particularly international lawyers. I am also very grateful to Dr. Mateusz Piątkowski with whom we have co-organized this discussion. Our panel has been recorded, therefore you can expect its publication in the near future. Stay tuned! :) #internationallaw #globalaffairs #politics #UniLodz

"To be an international lawyer in this day and age is thus to be the one in the arena, who willfully roll up their sleeves and fight for its place as a potent force of change in this world." Excited to share that I have successfully completed the intensive Peace Negotiations Summer School by Public International Law & Policy Group. The week of lectures was filled with insights from experts with extensive practical experience in negotiating peace agreements: former ambassadors, heads of delegations, foreign ministers, prosecutors, legal advisers, and international law scholars. Covering topics including but not limited to the Juba peace agreement, negotiations on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, the establishment of the UN Administration in Kosovo, and the indictment of former Liberian president Charles Taylor, a case-based approach was key to understanding the peculiarities and challenges in negotiating peace. With theoretical explanations backed by potent examples, experts addressed issues of peacebuilding and power sharing, the “7 deadly sins of mediation” and the “politics” of justice, as well as security sector reform and disarmament-demobilization-reintegration strategies (SSR & DDR). The most provocative topic for me was the one on Justice vs. Peace: Can the pursuit of justice impede the achievement of peace? How can amnesty be used as an effective mechanism to open up prospects for peace without putting the interests of victims and society on the back burner? I appreciate the experts addressing the role of women in peace negotiations and emphasizing their involvement not only in gender-related discussions but also in core security issues. I would also like to acknowledge the excellent mediator, Dr. Paul R. Williams, whose questions to the experts and subsequent reflections were as thought-provoking as the discussions themselves!

Yesterday, over 600 UK lawyers signed a letter to the prime minister: “We are UK-based or qualified lawyers, legal academics and former members of the judiciary committed to upholding the rule of law and to protecting fundamental rights; and who share deep concern about the catastrophe unfolding in the Gaza Strip. In a letter dated 26 October 2023, over a thousand members of the legal profession wrote to you concerning your Government's obligations to avert and avoid complicity in serious breaches of International Humanitarian Law (“IHL”) in Gaza.” They refer to the ICJ provisional orders, the UNSC ceasefire resolution and UN agencies warnings of imminent famine. “We write in the light of these developments to remind you of your Government’s obligations under international law, which require you to take, amongst others, the following five actions: 1. to work actively and effectively to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza; 2. to take all available measures to ensure safe access to and delivery of the essentials of existence and medical assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, including confirmation that UK funding to UNRWA will continue with immediate effect; 3. to impose sanctions upon individuals and entities who have made statements inciting genocide against Palestinians; 4. to suspend the provision of weapons and weapons systems to the Government of Israel; and 5. to suspend the 2030 Road Map for UK-Israel bilateral relations and negotiations towards an enhanced trade agreement and to initiate a review into the suspension of the UK’s bilateral trade agreement with Israel and consider the imposition of sanctions” It's time now that all of you here on LinkedIn start having these conversations, in your workplaces (if you haven't already) particularly at compliance, executive, leadership, and board levels: 1. Conduct due diligence and risk assessments in your organisation and supply chain to ensure you are not complicit in causing harm and genocide in any way. 2. Prepare for possible sanctions and even if your government has not imposed sanctions yet, you can do it. Read the legal reasoning here as to the governments obligations to act against that state. https://lnkd.in/e3yadrJ3
