Did you know only 28% of STEM workers are female, even though women make up nearly half the workforce? It's a sobering statistic that speaks volumes about how girls are often discouraged from pursuing their biggest dreams from an early age. Too many times, I've seen bright young women get nudged away from fields like engineering, computer science, or theoretical physics. The subtle pressures start early - to choose stable, "feminine" career paths like teaching or nursing over science and tech. To prioritize having a family over an ambitious career goal that could be seen as too demanding. Girls are constantly receiving messages about needing to be financially secure, find a partner, have kids...and rigorous STEM fields are portrayed as incompatible with those expectations. Rather than being nurtured to chart their own path, they get restricted by societal norms. But a dream job has no gender. With support and encouragement, girls can achieve anything they set their minds to. It's on all of us to uplift the next generation to overcome biases and pursue their true callings - whether that's biochemistry or dance, running a company or raising a family. Their potential is limitless if we show them the possibilities. "There is no pipeline of women in STEM." This oft heard refrain and excuse for failing to hire women for STEM jobs, is changing. It's heartbreaking to think that young girls, full of curiosity and potential, start doubting themselves in primary school. The biases and stereotypes they encounter can shape their beliefs about what they can achieve. This isn't just a personal loss—it's a loss for society as a whole. We need more brilliant minds in STEM, and girls bring unique perspectives that can lead to incredible innovations. Yet, from a young age, they are often subtly (or not so subtly) told that these fields aren't for them. This can be through things like: 👎 Gendered toys and books that push them away from building and problem-solving activities. 👎 Less encouragement in science and math classes. 👎 Fewer role models in STEM fields that look like them. So, what can we do to change this? 💡 Encourage young girls to explore and question the world around them. Buy them science kits, LEGOs, and books about female scientists and engineers. 💡 Be conscious of our language and the messages we send. Praise their efforts and problem-solving skills, not just their appearance. 💡 Highlight women in STEM. Share stories of female scientists, engineers, and tech leaders. Show them that they can be anything they want to be. It’s not just about opening doors; it’s about tearing down the walls that prevent them from walking through. Every girl should feel empowered to pursue her interests and talents, free from the shadow of stereotypes. This is a concerning trend, especially given the importance of STEM fields in driving innovation and progress in our society. It's clear that more needs to be done to encourage and support women in pursuing careers in these areas. However, there are some positive signs of progress. Women make up 35% of employees in #STEM in the U.S. That may seem like a respectable number to some people, but STEM only makes up 25% of the total U.S. labor force. That means only 8.75% of the total labor force is comprised of women in STEM. While this can be attributed to many factors, I think some of the most important ones are perception and exposure. Our youth are environmentally naturalized towards different interests based simply on their gender. Gender stereotypes begin early, influencing girls’ perceptions of their abilities in math and science. These stereotypes can lead to a lack of confidence and interest in STEM subjects from a young age. Fewer women choose to pursue higher education in STEM fields. The World Economic Forum notes that globally, less than a third of female students choose to study subjects like math and engineering in higher education. If we were to encourage more young girls to play with science kits or toy cars, they’d be more inclined to explore how those things work, and by extension, pursue that interest into higher education. However, various strategies have been proposed and implemented to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM. One of the most glaring challenges women encounter in STEM is the persistent underrepresentation in these fields. According to UNESCO data, only around 35% of STEM students globally are female, and this discrepancy persists throughout their careers. For instance, in the United States, women hold only 28% of STEM jobs, despite constituting nearly half of the total workforce. Gender bias also presents a formidable obstacle for women in STEM. Stereotypes and biases, both explicit and implicit, contribute to a hostile environment where women face discrimination, lack of support, and unequal opportunities. Studies have shown that women are often overlooked for promotions, receive lower salaries than their male counterparts for the same work, and encounter greater challenges in securing research funding. Moreover, societal expectations and cultural norms play a significant role in discouraging women from pursuing STEM careers. From a young age, girls are often steered away from STEM subjects due to stereotypes that these fields are better suited for boys. Over one million women are now in STEM occupations but still account for only 29% of STEM workforce. A lack of girls in STEM There is a noticeable gap between girls and boys that study STEM subjects beyond GCSE (35% of girls and 80% of boys). At university, there are only 25% of graduates in STEM subjects who are women and 52% are males. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? More role models in STEM During the survey from The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), when asked to name a woman - past or present - in STEM, only 8% could name any women who have made significant contributions to STEM fields. Having more visible female role models for girls in STEM would help to close the gender gap. If girls in secondary school were to see more females succeeding in STEM careers, then it would empower them to take STEM subjects and potentially pursue a career in the related fields. Giving girls real-life examples of women in STEM would help them to model themselves after those successful women. Today is STEM Day. So I thought I would talk about the importance of encouraging women in STEM. Let's go back many years ago when women and grils were broadly dscouraged from STEM fields. As girls they were discouraged from taking science classes. And if they did, God forbid if they might actually have an aptitude for it. And then if they actually made it through the casual and sometimes overt misogyny of STEM classes in college, they would find themselves surrounded by co-workers who were all men. Not a recipe for bringing gender equity into STEM fields. As a matter of fact, when I first started recruiting, finding a female product manager with an engineering degree was like finding big foot. You were told they were out there but you never seemed to find one. Today it is much better but there is still a long way to go. So here's what we should all do. Encourage young women to pursue the sciences Encourage them to take math classes and don't let them talk themselves into "being bad at math". Take your daughters to a science museum. Promote their ability to express intellectual curioiusity. By doing this we will not only help with the growing shortage of STEM workers, we will also bring unique female perspectives into the creation of new life improving products.
