Whenever I buy tickets for the football (Reading FC, before you ask*) I have to allocate each seat to a named account-holder. This gives them access to a huge amount of more specific data than theatres typically collect. And yes, it's partly about deterring/responding to hooliganism, but it's also used for loyalty points etc. Which makes me wonder: a) how much/how well do they use it for understanding attendance patterns? b) would theatres benefit from doing the same? (and would it be realistically possible?) c) how much would our understanding of audiences change if we did? Any reflections welcome... (*also sometimes Sheffield United: no-one said audience behaviour was simple...) ;0)
