In February 2023, 61 companies from the UK finished a 6-month pilot of a #4dayweek. How are they doing today one year on? 🇬🇧 ⬇ These results show that the 4 day week is not only gaining traction as a permanent policy, but the benefits of trialing it continue beyond the initial 6-month mark. FEBCILITATION DAY 13: IS YOUR GATHERING PASSING THE SMALL TALK TEST? ✈️ Last week on a flight, I sat next to L, a data engineer who mainly works from home in regional Australia. Turns out he was on his way to an in-person “team building offsite strategy thing” (air quotes his own) in another capital city. Me: Oh, that sounds like fun! L: Yeah I guess. I don’t really know who else is going to be there or what the agenda is. Other than some ---- park activity thing, so I packed my ------- (redaction to protect L's identity - it was very specific) Me: 😳 (slightly triggered) L: They figured they’d better get us all together in person cos we haven’t done it in a while*… Me: (having palpitations now) Okay, so what do you think they want you to do together? L: Oh just some strategy stuff I guess Me: 😐 *Febcilitation followers will recognise this from Day 9’s post as a terrible reason to organise a workplace anything. It’s fair to say L’s company invested a chunk of time, energy and resources into flying employees from right around the country for this “team building offsite strategy thing” - but when an invitee can’t properly articulate what it’s about, or why they’re joining, let alone muster up some fake enthusiasm while describing it to a seat mate on a flight - surely something's amiss. For anyone attending an in-person kickoff - Don't waste this opportunity: There are two key audiences you want to engage with during your time together: 1) Your team. Every year we have the privilege of the opportunity to climb a big hill and get a view from the top. The climb is challenging, which is good, because we value and get reward from challenge. Take this opportunity to connect with your peers and bond over the shared challenge. Mutual support makes the climb much easier and certainly more enjoyable. In practice this means: - Find time to chat outside of sessions - +100 pts if you can do a physical activity like running/yoga etc together. - Do a 'real' check-in. Find out how 2023 was and how they are showing up in 2024... Be curious as to how you can be a good partner in business/friend. 2. Stakeholders that you need to be successful: This is usually the best time to connect with people that you depend on today and who influence your future. At any non-presentation event (activities/cocktails/meals), seek out that senior leader that you would like time with, introduce yourself to shared services folks like Legal, Finance, etc.... It is much easier to get attention at end of quarter crunch-time when you have established some rapport outside of asking for help. Lastly, remember that careers are never made, but sometimes lost at kickoff. Everything in moderation and nothing good every happens after midnight.

Just a friendly reminder that during August 6–9, we will experiment with our first Focus Week—a week dedicated to (un)learning and discovery. 💡 ✨ During Focus Week, VA Staff will: 💭 Do work requiring deep thought, imagination, creativity, or concentration 📚 Dive into reading or listening material related to professional (un)learning 💡 Work on our professional development and (un)learning plans 🤓 Work on "side of desk" projects we've been meaning to get to 🤝 Engage in co-(un)learning with other folks on the team Please note that responses to messages and emails may be delayed, and external meetings will be rescheduled. After this experiment, we'll do a light evaluation of how Focus Week went and share our findings. Continuing my post from last week, today I want to share some more learnings I took from our #MBioPitstop last year. So, welcome to Part Two of Decoding the dynamics of the Hybrid Highway: 👉 Communication through and through In any event, but especially when connecting different locations, communication is crucial. Define a single channel for coordination and designate individuals responsible for maintaining clear, concise, and consistent communication throughout the day. It will ensure a smooth operation from beginning to end. 👉 Good Ideas can also fail There are many things that contribute to the success of an idea and activity during an event. And, spoiler alert, great ideas can also fail. And that’s not because the idea wasn’t good, but most likely due to the circumstances surrounding it. Make sure to look at every idea from a 360º perspective, considering the timing, the people involved, the cadence in the agenda, and so forth. Sometimes, it’s the smaller things that make a big difference. 👉 Feedback: The Instant and the Pensive  Gathering feedback in the heat of the moment is an art. Talking to people, experiencing the event firsthand, and collating instant reactions provide a snapshot. But don't stop there. A few days later, dive into more formal feedback. It's the yin and yang of understanding your audience's pulse. 👉 Post-Event Debrief: Timing is Everything  The day-of is not the day for dissecting everything that could've gone better. Let the feedback percolate. Organize your thoughts, ask your team to do the same, and then, orchestrate a retrospective. Give time for emotions to settle and insights to bloom. 👉 Fun and Appreciation: The Unsung Heroes  Amidst the whirlwind, don't forget to have fun. Celebrate victories—big and small—with your team and those who contributed. Perfection is elusive, but the joy of progress and shared achievement is ever present. I could continue, but let’s stop here 😅 At the end of the day, what is most important is taking the learnings and lessons and apply them in the future.
