EVENT REMINDER | BGA Touring Lecture 2024 – Bristol... 🟢 Event: Applications of machine learning in geotechnical site characterization and design 🟢 Presenter: Professor Bruno Stuyts, of University of Ghent, Belgium 🟢 Date: 13 November 2024 🟢 Time: 18:15 - 19:30 🟢 Where: The Reception Rooms, Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol This in-person event is FREE to attend, and hosted by the BGA Southwestern Group (BGA SW). Synopsis: During geotechnical and geophysical site characterisation for large infrastructure projects, significant data volumes are being collected which need to be processed and interpreted. Moreover, the feedback from foundation construction (e.g. pile driving) provides valuable feedback on the actual ground conditions at the site. Due to the limited budgets available for site characterisation and the various sources of uncertainty, the interpretation of ground investigation data and installation records relies on a combination of data from various sources (e.g. in-situ test, laboratory tests and pile load testing), the use of parameter correlations from the literature and expert judgement. The lecture aims to provide engineers an insight into the applicability of machine learning in their daily practice and on the potential issues which may arise when using these methods. 🏊🏻♀️ Diving into the history of the Lassonde School of Engineering - York University Looking into a new chapter of my life, alongside the #LEIS team, as a Special Projects Assistant, I stumbled upon this inspiring speech by Pierre Lassonde, researching the origins of the school that bears his name. The speech not only intrigued me about who Lassonde is but also offered valuable insights that I believe will shape my approach in this role, such as: 💫 A motivating and encouraging message Lassonde did not sugarcoat the challenges ahead, but instead provided practical advice on how to face them. His words reminded me that success is not about having a perfect plan from the start, but about being #adaptable, #resilient, and #proactive. It's about taking action, learning from our experiences, and building trust with those around us. 💪🏼 Be a PEST Lassonde introduced the PEST "Passion, Experience, Speed, and Trust" acronym as a guide to success. Each element is vital: #Passion fuels our motivation, #Experience develops our skills, #Speed emphasizes the importance of timely action, #Trust forms the foundation of all relationships. These qualities serve as a broader philosophy on approaching life and work. 🏁 The Value of Starting Somewhere One of the most fundamental pieces of advice from Lassonde’s speech was the recognition that the “first job” may not be glamorous. This resonated with me because it's easy to get carried away with the idea that the first job has to be perfect. But what matters is to focus on what we do and approach each opportunity as an opportunity to #grow and #learn... Of course, without forgetting to #enjoy it.
