#013- What makes a good strength and conditioning program?
This week I'm putting the final touches on my presentation for the Foot and Ankle Show Digital.
I'll be speaking about strength and conditioning, what it is, how it is relevant to podiatry, key components of a good strength and conditioning program, including strategies that you can take away and implement!
So what are those key components that make up a good strength and conditioning program?
Firstly, there needs to be structure and direction. The athlete or client needs to know exactly what the plan is, and exactly what to do for each and every week, training day, exercise etc. There should be no unanswered questions, no confusion, and have clear goals.
Second, the program needs to follow the core principles of training. These are overload, specificity and individualisation. There are other principles, but these are the main three that I draw upon in my programs.
Third, the program needs to create buy in and adherence. Not just by having a solid written program with structure and direction, but by the environment and the relationship that the coach builds with their athlete. The athlete should leave each session feeling better about themselves, and look forward to the next.
With this in mind, what does a POOR strength and conditioning program look like?
The exact opposite.
Firstly, the client will be unsure of what's going on. The coach will just write them some exercises on a piece of paper and say "here, do these three times a day until I see you next".

Secondly, the program will be cookie cutter, not individualised, not specific at all to their sport or time of season, and full of exercises that don't translate to improved sports performance (junk exercises).
Third, the athlete will be unsure about whether the coach can help them, they will de-value the program (not do their exercises), ultimately dropping off (cancelling their appointments) which is a fast track to re-injury.
So HOW do we turn our rehab and strength programs into GOOD programs? You'll have to tune in and find out!
