10 Nov 1775 Happy Birthday Marines- Semper Fi
As a US Marine Veteran who served from 1986 to 1991, including a tour during the Gulf War, there are moments when the Marine Corps Hymn plays, or when I witness the proud celebration of the Marine Corps Birthday, that I still feel an overwhelming rush of emotion. It's not just nostalgia or sentimentality. It’s the deep, lifelong bond that connects Marines, past and present.
The Power of Tradition
The United States Marine Corps is a living testament to the strength of tradition. Today, as we celebrate the 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, I reflect on how these traditions have shaped me and countless others throughout history. The Marine Corps Hymn isn’t just a song—it’s a reminder of what we stand for: honor, courage, and commitment. These values were instilled in me from the moment I stepped onto the yellow footprints in San Diego, and they have never left me.
When I hear the Marine Corps Hymn today, I don’t just remember the formation of the Corps or the battles we’ve fought. I think of every Marine who has ever earned the uniform, every Marine who has sacrificed and served, and the brothers and sisters I had the privilege of serving alongside. The Hymn is more than just music—it’s a connection to something much greater than me. It represents a bond that spans generations, a promise that we, the few, will always stand together, no matter where life takes us.
A Brotherhood Like No Other
Celebrating the Marine Corps Birthday is more than a ritual—it’s a reaffirmation of that bond. Even years after I took off the uniform, I’m still a Marine. And so are all the other men and women who earned the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Whether you served in Vietnam, Desert Storm, or Iraq, we share something that will never fade: the pride of being a Marine. On November 10th, we don’t just celebrate history—we celebrate each other.
The Marine Corps Birthday isn’t about just one day; it’s about the lifetime of commitment and sacrifice that all Marines have made. Whether you’re active duty or a retired veteran, we are part of something timeless. We honor those who have served and those who continue to serve, always remembering that we are bound by the same oath, the same values, and the same fierce determination to protect and defend our nation.

The Gulf War and the Meaning of Sacrifice
For me, the Gulf War was a defining moment of my service. It was a conflict that brought the realities of war into sharp focus, but also revealed the strength of the Marine Corps spirit. The camaraderie I experienced in the desert, the resilience of my fellow Marines, and the unwavering dedication to our mission were powerful reminders of why the Marine Corps is unique. We faced challenges, but we faced them together.
Even today, when I think back on those days, I know the true value of what we did was not just in the battle we fought, but in the brotherhood we forged. The Marine Corps isn’t just about fighting wars; it’s about standing by your fellow Marines, no matter what, and living by a code that binds us all. This is what makes the Marine Corps different—it’s not just a job; it’s a lifelong identity.
A Lifelong Identity
Today, on the Marine Corps’ 249th birthday, I reflect on the privilege of having served in an organization that’s built on values that transcend time. The traditions, the customs, the ceremonies—they connect me to a history of Marines who paved the way long before I ever joined, and to those who continue to serve today. The Marine Corps may evolve, but its core values remain unchanging, and that is what keeps us all linked, no matter where we are in life.
So, yes, I still get emotional when I hear the Marine Corps Hymn or when I stand among Marines to celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday. Those feelings aren’t just about remembering the past; they’re about honoring the present and looking toward the future. The legacy of the Marine Corps lives in each of us, whether we served a few years or thirty, whether we were in combat or stationed on a base.
Happy Birthday, Marines!
To all my fellow Marines—active, retired, and fallen—Happy 249th Birthday! Today, we celebrate the Corps that has defined us, shaped us, and made us proud. May we always uphold the values that make us the few, the proud, and the strongest fighting force in the world. Semper Fi, Marines! Here’s to the next 249 years.
