10 Qualities That Make Good Bosses Unforgettable.

Boss: You are late !

Employee: It is only 9:20 am. I was driving my girlfriend to university, and got stuck in traffic.

Boss: works starts at 9:00am – be here or else !

Employee: ok, but then you will have to drive your daughter each morning yourself.

Many bosses never complain when you leave late but get offended by every minute you arrive late.

That behavior is part of that same thing called micromanagement - over-control based on insecurity and a desire to control others.

Be flexible, be trusting, be empowering.

Your employees will be happy and productive. You will be happier yourself.

"Go back home, please.

Do not try to be a hero by coming to work with flu.

Heroes save people. They don't pass them contagious diseases.

Take good care of yourself. I will cover for you while you are away. Don't worry about anything and get well soon."

Unfortunately, few managers say this. In fact, they often tell you to fight it off, to be strong.

A STRANGE BOSS arrived.

He told us that if we WORK LATE

1) we are not efficient

2) we would be coming to work tired the next morning and thus will make mistakes and not think outside the box

3) our families eventually will ask us to find another job

4) and get this, he wants us to have a life outside the office and to leave the office on time

He set the example by himself always leaving on time.

This former strange boss of mine, Barry Appelman , invented instant messaging, video over IP, holds 60 patents, and was the head of software development of AOL in its glorious days of the 90s.

His teams were always the most innovative, at IBM Watson and AOL.

Do you agree with his style of management, of letting employees have a life ?

So true! I had a “strange boss” (author’s words, not mine!) early in my career and didn’t know how fortunate I was at the time. He led by example and taught me the importance of working smarter, not harder. His management style was so unique; many conversations were like those between a coach and his star player(s). When I would put in extra hours (off the clock - I was salaried), I knew it was not required or expected. And, although it was appreciated, he would question why I stayed late and help me find ways to challenge/change anything I felt was slowing down my productivity or limiting how effectively I was spending my time. I learned so much from him and hope one day I will be even half the mentor/manager/boss/leader/coach that he was to me.
