10 Questions to Ask Yourself So You Can Better Hone Your Coaching

"Asking the right questions is a Superpower, one question can change your life!"

As a coach, your ability to impact others depends not only on your skills but also on your willingness to continuously grow.

Self reflection is one of the most powerful tools you can use to refine your practice, ensuring you remain effective, connected, and aligned with your purpose.

Asking yourself the right questions can lead to breakthroughs, not only for you but for your clients as well.

Below are 10 essential questions every coach should regularly ask to hone their craft and stay on the path of growth.

Let's go...

10 Questions to Hone Your Coaching:

1. Why Did I Start Coaching?

It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day grind and lose sight of why you began this journey in the first place.

Why did you start coaching in the first place?

By doing over 300 interviews with coaches, I realized that for each coach, their WHY is always rooted inside their greatest challenge.

In other words, their greatest obstacle that they needed to overcome in their life was the catalyst for their coaching.

Revisiting your "why" helps reconnect you with the passion that sparked your desire to coach.

Whether it was to help others, share your knowledge, or make a difference in people’s lives, grounding yourself in this purpose can reignite your drive and sharpen your focus.

Ask yourself...

2. How Does My Coaching Align with My Values and Purpose?

Coaching is most powerful when it’s aligned with your core values.

Reflecting on whether your coaching style and methods resonate with your personal beliefs is crucial.

Are you guiding your clients in a way that reflects your deeper purpose?

Alignment between your coaching and your values ensures authenticity, which clients can sense and trust.

That's why it's important to find who your ideal target client is.

[Here is a complete guide how to do that]

When you focus on your ideal client, ask yourself this very important question...

3. Am I Actively Listening to My Clients?

Active listening is at the heart of effective coaching.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of offering solutions or advice too quickly, but coaching is about helping clients discover their own insights.

Ask yourself if you’re truly listening to understand, not just to respond.

Active listening fosters stronger relationships and allows your clients to feel heard, valued, and respected.

Then ask yourself...

4. Am I Creating a Safe Space for My Clients to Be Vulnerable?

Coaching thrives on trust, and trust is built when clients feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment.

Reflect on the environment you create during your sessions.

Do your clients feel comfortable being vulnerable?

By providing a non judgmental, compassionate space, you can help clients open up, leading to deeper breakthroughs and more authentic progress.

You need to ask yourself...

5. What Tools or Techniques Am I Using That Yield the Best Results?

Your coaching toolbox is filled with various methods, but not all of them will work equally well for every client.

Consider which tools and techniques consistently bring about the most positive outcomes.

Are there certain methods that clients respond to better?

Understanding what works best allows you to lean into those strategies while also making space for experimentation and new approaches.

Be brutally honest with yourself, ask...

6. What Areas of My Coaching Style Could Benefit from Improvement?

No matter how experienced you are, there’s always room for growth.

Take an honest look at your coaching style.

Are there areas where you feel less confident or effective?

This might involve deepening your knowledge, refining certain techniques, or even adopting new practices.

Acknowledging where you can improve is the first step toward becoming a better coach.

7. How Do I Measure My Clients’ Progress?

Every coach needs a way to measure the success and progress of their clients.

Are you tracking this in a systematic way, or are you relying on anecdotal feedback?

Consider whether you have concrete benchmarks or performance indicators in place.

Math doesn't lie!

A clear understanding of your clients’ growth not only helps them see their progress but also gives you insights into your own effectiveness.

Coaching is not as much as telling people what to do, but rather helping them find the answers within.

So ask...

8. Am I Encouraging My Clients to Take Ownership of Their Journey?

It’s important to strike a balance between guiding your clients and empowering them to take charge of their own growth.

Ask yourself if you’re fostering a sense of ownership in your clients.

Are they relying too much on your direction, or are they learning to trust their own judgment?

The most successful coaching relationships involve clients who feel empowered to make decisions and act on their insights.

Learning and improvement never stops, that's why you need to know...

9. How Am I Investing in My Own Development as a Coach?

Finally...

10. What Feedback Have I Received Recently, and How Am I Applying It?

Feedback is a gift, whether it comes from your clients, peers, or mentors.

Reflect on the feedback you’ve received lately, both positive and constructive.

How have you applied that feedback to enhance your coaching?

Being open to receiving and integrating feedback allows you to fine tune your approach and ensure that you’re always improving.

Conclusion

Great coaches aren’t born, they’re shaped by continuous reflection, growth, and an unwavering commitment.

By regularly asking yourself these 10 questions, you can sharpen your coaching skills, build stronger client relationships, and ensure that your work remains aligned with your purpose.

Remember, the journey of a coach is one of lifelong learning, and these reflections are just the beginning of an ongoing process of improvement.
