10 Ways To Spot Your Strengths + Amplify Them

Want to stand out from the crowd? Wish you had more presence? Eager to project more influence?

Keep on reading then.

Executive presence is a mixture of skills and character strengths that allow you to gain competitive edge, engage others with ease and ooze magnetic energy.

It can't be faked but it can be cultivated.

If you want to amplify your executive presence, first of all you need to start with understanding your character strengths in order to cultivate it and use it to your advantage. And also become aware of your blind spots in the process.

Individual areas of greatest potential rein in the areas of one’s strengths. Recognising it enables an individual to succeed and cope in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world and make the most of the opportunities that such world provides.

One of the top researches into character strengths Alex Linley defined strengths as ‘pre-existing capacity for a particular way of behaving, thinking or feeling that is authentic and energising to the user, and enables optimal functioning, development and performance'.

Check out his book Average to A+ if you want to know more. Highly recommend it!

Before I share 10 tips how you can spot your strengths and what you are really good at, it is important to outline some of the criteria by which strengths are characterised and distinguished :

  1. Strength is a trait or psychological characteristic that can be found and seen across different situations and over a period of time. One time charitable action doesn’t define you as a kind person and it doesn’t mean that humanity is your virtue.
  2. Strength is valued in its own right. In other words, we value our strengths for its own sake even when there are no obvious benefits for us. It is argued that strengths often result in good consequences. Aristotle wisely said that actions taken solely for external reasons can’t be virtuous because they are coaxed and coerced.
  3. Strengths are also found on what parents want for their newborn babies such as to become loving, or achieve high academic results. These strengths are states we desire that don’t need any further justification.
  4. Other are elevated and inspired by observing individuals displaying virtuous action. When an individual engages his/her strengths that produces authentic happiness.
  5. The culture supports strengths by providing institutions, rituals, role models, parades, maxims and children’s stories. Role models quite vividly can illustrate virtues and strengths.
  6. Strengths have to be ubiquitous or valued by almost every culture in the world.

Here are 10 things to look out for if you want to recognise your strengths:

1. Childhood memories:  What do you remember doing as a child that you still do now – but most likely much better? Strengths often have deep roots from our early childhood.

2. Energy and vibe: Activities or tasks that give you an energetic buzz and positive vibe when you are doing them are very likely calling on your strengths.

3. Authenticity: If you are engaged in activity that feels most like the real you, the chances are that you will be using your strengths in some way.

4. Ease: Activities that come naturally to you, and at which you excel – sometimes even without making an effort, will likely be your strengths.

5. Attention: People are more likely to focus on things that are playing to our strengths therefore we naturally pay attention to it.

6. Rapid/fast learning and optimal development: Rapid learning often indicates an underlying strength. If an individual is picking things up effortlessly in some areas and continue to show growth over lifespan, signature strengths will most likely be engaged and cultivated.

7. Motivation: When you find activities that you are passionate about and do them simply for the sake of them, they are likely to be working from your strengths.

8. Voice: If you monitor your voice and notice a shift in passion, energy and engagement, you’re probably talking about a strength.

9. Words and phrases: When you’re saying “I love to…” or “It’s just great when….,” the chances are that it’s a strength to which you are referring.

10. “To do” lists: Notice the things that never make it on to your “to do” list. These things that always seem to get done often reveal an underlying strength that means we never need to be asked or reminded twice.

We all have strengths, they are part of human nature. One just need to tap into these inner resources and develop it further. According to a research, only 38% of UK respondents knew their strengths and also think that focusing on weaknesses will help them improve rather than nurturing their strengths. So what are your strengths?
