10: You Gotta Know When to Hold ‘em, Know When to Fold ‘em.

I am not the first brand jedi to claim that consistency is the key to success, but what exactly should you be consistent about?

Your visual and tone brand identity is a great, universal place for any business to start as far as consistency is concerned, which is your logo, your brand color palette, your typography, your voice, etc. This helps so much with brand awareness, creating a sense of familiarity and trust with your prospects.

My co-founder Dana Sardano and I run four separate divisions of our company UPC concurrently. Visual brand consistency not only helps separate our brands for relative audiences, but it keeps me SANE in having good orderly direction for our campaigns and outreach.

Beyond that, you just have to do what feels RIGHT for you.

As the mighty Bruce Springsteen surmises in his quote at the top of this article, to sustain your audience, your consistent actions MUST be purposeful.

To give you a sense of how this works for our UPC brands, I will share what we do consistently and why.

Since last July 2023, Dana and I have been consistently posting reels on my page from our Going Commando with Angela & Dana Podcast every single day, including weekends and holidays, here on LinkedIn between 8:30-9am EST.

It’s a priority for us because we want to not only promote our show, but we have been told time and time again through engagement with them that these little nugs of wisdom or ridiculousness really do make some people’s day, and that is what our show is all about. After all it’s…for the sake of humanity!

We also post the reels consistently on Meta (FB/IG) and YouTube, but those are a bit more spaced out and not so much about connecting with people but rather building organic awareness for our show.

As for our other brands, UPCcreativeservices.com, Phenom-Publishing.com, and UniquelyPhenom.com, we are less consistent with posting content unless there is something to announce. This is intentional, as these sub brands are our street cred to back up the question that new viewers may have such as, “Why you guys?” “What do you know about it anyway?”

🔥HOT TIP: This summer, Phenom Publishing is going to be making some serious noise, so you best follow our page there to be the first in the know!

Dana is posting every day here on LinkedIn as well to promote her creativity and intuitive guidance.

All our consistent online social presence tactics are thoughtfully designed to drive new subscribers to our show and build it organically.

As some of you may know, part of my professional brand is that I am awfully authentic (just watch any episode of Going Commando and you’ll see.) I am also passionate about life and extremely dedicated to my craft. One of my outlets is to write these articles, but I have fallen off the wagon as far as posting a new article every week because honestly, I didn’t feel much like writing these past few weeks.

Did anyone die because I missed a couple weeks? No.

Did I lose subscribers because I didn’t post on my self-imposed schedule? Maybe, but I also gained new followers, so I suppose ya’ll aren’t that perturbed!

Because I created this newsletter as a chance to share my expertise through my love for long form, authentic writing, it just seemed off-brand to push something out for the sake of being consistent with when the articles typically are released. I feel no shame!

Being consistent means also being true to yourself.

Ask yourself, what REALLY matters to you?

Is it being top of mind? Great, post content 2-3x per week on the same day each week, and create it so you have at least two weeks worth of content banked to help for those days you don’t feel so inspired.

If getting new clients/customers/subscribers is your priority, then focus consistently on your campaigns, outreach, networking, and engagement. Show up early for meetings, and make sure your communication and messaging are on point for your goals and aligned with your brand.

Do you want to feel connected to like-minded people? Then allocate time in your day on the daily where you are commenting and engaging with the content put out by the people you wish to surround yourself with. DM people you really connect with, and take it a step further and set up virtual how-do-you-do’s. Align with your brand values (Are you a thought leader? A cheerleader? A pumpkin pie eater?), and consistently provide value-add when joining conversations.

Of course ALL of these things could matter to you, but if you could focus on ONE goal that really matters to you and ONE consistent approach to reach that goal, not only will it be concrete and measurable, which makes it fun to see your consistent work pay off, but you’ll be focused and doing what brings you the most joy.

If being consistent to reach a goal becomes a burdensome chore, it will be really hard to stay on that path.

To be successful, be thoughtfully consistent with what matters the most to you and your business.

If it matters to you, it will come from your heart and it will resonate with your people more than you might think.

“Then allocate time in your day on the daily where you are commenting and engaging with the content put out by the people you wish to surround yourself with.” This is gold, Angela DiMarco. When I recognize a person’s name and tone (awareness of tone & energy is key) and then receive an invitation to connect, I’m far more likely to approach that with curiosity. The random connection and then immediate sales pitch (even for something free) totally turn me off!

Building an audience takes time and dedication. But the rewards of a loyal following are worth the effort.

Well said! I appreciate the idea of being consistent. My top StrengthFinder skills support that. My colleague Sarah Elkins has an interesting take on defining one's self-priority and personal why. She asks her podcast guests to explain what they do without using a job title. So, instead of saying, "I host the Cultivating Curiosity podcast," I respond with, "I want to inspire people to think, "Hmmm, I didn't know that." That expression increasingly guides my actions. Instead of focusing on downloads, reactions, and impressions — a dangerous and deep black hole — I'm trying to focus on inspiring curiosity, which is the foundation for creativity.
