The 116 Rokeby Street project, a collaboration between renowned architects Carr and forward-thinking developers Figurehead Construction , showcases the future of office spaces while highlighting the versatility and performance of Capral’s aluminium systems in modern construction.
The 11-storey structure embodies the concept of a ‘breathing space’, seamlessly blending the area’s rich industrial heritage with contemporary architectural elements. At its core, the project’s success hinges on a holistic approach to sustainability, user well-being, and architectural innovation underpinned by high-quality Capral products.
Carr’s architectural vision for 116 Rokeby Street centred on creating a space that respects its industrial surroundings while paving the way for future commercial architecture. The design team faced the challenge of balancing Collingwood’s robust character with the need for a contemporary, forward-thinking commercial space. Their solution pays homage to the area’s fragmented industrial materiality while introducing elements of lightness and transparency.
Key design principles included maximizing natural light and air circulation, achieved through careful building orientation, strategic window placement, and innovative double-skin façades. The result is an open, airy space that feels connected to the outside world, even in a bustling urban environment. The building’s environmental performance was a top priority, influencing every design aspect, from material choice to the integration of cutting-edge sustainable technologies.
Capral’s aluminium systems played a crucial role in realizing this vision. The AGS 600 Narrowline and AGS 625 Narrowline window systems allowed for expansive glazed areas, maximizing natural light while maintaining excellent thermal performance. The Futureline 629TB system, with its thermal break technology, significantly enhanced the building’s energy efficiency. For sliding doors leading to outdoor terraces and balconies, the AGS 900 Slider system provides smooth operation and weather resistance, which is ideal for Melbourne’s variable climate.
The building’s innovative double-skin façade, incorporating Capral’s high-performance aluminium framing, serves as a thermal buffer and is crucial in the natural ventilation strategy. Capral’s AGS 50 Window system was instrumental in this ventilation strategy, offering robust design and excellent weatherproofing properties. For main entrances and high-traffic areas, the AGS 225 Door system was selected for its durability, security, and alignment with the project’s sustainability goals.
