I know that for many of you nearing retirement, personal finances can be a chore, as your assets grow and your liabilities hopefully begin to shrink. That makes it extra important for each of us to know and understand our numbers.

If you want more growth from your money, you have to be intentional about knowing what you have. I’m going to give you a rundown of the 12 personal financial numbers you need to know.

  1. Total Assets - What is the total value of your assets that you own?
  2. Total Liabilities - What is the total amount you owe on your liabilities?
  3. Personal Net Worth - What is the difference between your assets and your liabilities?
  4. Credit Score - What is your FICO score and are your credit reports accurate?
  5. Monthly Income - What is your total monthly income from all income sources?
  6. Monthly Expenses - What is your total monthly expenses?
  7. Discretionary Income - How much cushion do you have left over each month between your income and your expenses?
  8. Personal Savings/Investing Rate - What percentage of your income goes towards your retirement savings and investments?
  9. Interest Rates - What interest rates are you getting on your investments and what interest rates are you paying on your debts?
  10. Emergency Savings - What is your current emergency fund balance and what is your emergency savings goal?
  11. Retirement Number - How much retirement and savings do you need to retire comfortably?
  12. Tax Bracket - What is your taxable income and what is the tax rate you pay on your taxable income?
