14 Valuable Lessons Learned in 14 Years of Leadership

Whether you are pursuing a side hustle, looking into a different industry, or getting into your first leadership role; it can be can be intimidating and overwhelming. As with anything, it takes time find your groove.

Below, our Founder and CEO, Lewis Maleh , shares 14 hard lessons he has learned these past 14 years building a Global Executive Search Firm.

1. Don’t be afraid to take the risk

To be successful in business, you have to be courageous. In my case, starting a business during the ongoing financial crisis was risky, yet at the same time, it was a great time for those willing to take a chance. Don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Ask yourself “What is the worst possible scenario?” and assess the situation. Chances are, the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

2. Don’t feel defined by your failures

Failure is inevitable, especially when taking on a challenge or trying new ways of things, but it doesn’t define who we are. In fact, without failure, there is no growth because we learn some of the most valuable lessons from failing. Use it as a teaching moment that can empower not only you but also others through sharing difficult experiences.

3. Learn to be flexible and adaptable

In today’s fast-paced world, things can change quickly. Learn to adapt to new situations and be flexible in your approach, and you will be better equipped to handle challenges.

4. Master intentional communication and listening

Mastering the two underrated skills of communication and listening can make all the difference. Effective communication ensures a shared understanding and common goals, while attentive listening enables us to empathize with others and address their needs and concerns. Don’t underestimate their power.

5. Create a learning culture and encourage growth

Never stop learning! Create a culture of growth and development by inspiring yourself and team to learn new skills and providing opportunities for professional development. Stay engaged and motivated while improving your expertise.

6. Build a sense of community in the workplace

Build a community at work and watch the entire company thrive. Creating a welcoming atmosphere where employees feel valued and supported is key to success.

7. Care for the well-being of others

Providing support during challenging moments is a powerful way to strengthen relationships and boost overall team productivity. As we’re facing a wave of professional burnout, now is the prioritise the well-being of your team. It also translates into improved performance and success of the company as a whole.

8. Diarise time for your team, client, family and yourself

Achieving a balanced work and personal life may seem daunting, but it’s vital for staying healthy and happy while being productive.

9. Set smaller goals to keep yourself motivated

Breaking down bigger projects into smaller, achievable tasks can pave the way for greater accomplishments. By doing so, you will keep yourself motivated and on track as you work towards your larger goals. It’s important to recognise and celebrate even the smallest achievements on which you build your future success.

10. Hire the right people for the right positions

Creating a high-performing team requires careful consideration when hiring. It’s essential to look for people who not only have the necessary qualifications for the role but also align with the company’s values and culture. Investing time and resources in the hiring process will allow you to select the right people for the right positions and avoid costly mistakes down the road.

11. Say “Yes” to more things

Saying “yes” to more opportunities can lead to new experiences and growth. Embrace challenges and stretch assignments as opportunities to develop new skills and expand your knowledge. However, it’s important to balance taking on new tasks with your existing responsibilities to avoid burnout.

12. Build a network of the right people around you

Your success as a leader depends on many factors and your environment is one of them. Surround yourself with the right people – mentors, peers, and advisors – who will provide you with valuable guidance and feedback as you navigate your leadership role. 

13. Keep trying, never give up and enjoy the moment

Persistence is key. The road to success is not always easy. Reframe setbacks as learning opportunities, and never give up on your goals. Celebrate your successes and enjoy the journey along the way. Remember, it’s a journey, not a destination.

14. Be Kind to Yourself

The journey of life and work is filled with growth, challenges, and incredible accomplishments. As you celebrate milestones, remember that kindness extends to yourself as well. Recognize your own hard work, resilience, and the value you bring. Be patient during setbacks, celebrate the victories, and prioritize your own well-being throughout the journey.
