2) Jonakiphul / Ajinai / Arrow Pondweed ( Monochoria hastata L. )- Story of Potential Vegetables in India

Monochoria hastata L. commonly known as Jonakiphul (Assam), Ajinai (Bodo), Launkia (Hindi), and Nukha (WB) is a lesser known yet highly beneficial aquatic plant with a rich culinary and medicinal history. Available across various countries like China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.

While this plant is widely found in India and Southeast Asia, it remains underutilized, especially in Indian cuisine, despite its immense potential as a functional food. Traditionally consumed in Assam and West Bengal, the flower buds are used in a variety of local dishes, offering an exotic twist and numerous health benefits.

This plant is often confused with Bhat Meteka (Assam) and Nanka (West Bengal Monochoria hastata is similar to M. vaginalis (Ali et al., 2018PIER, 2019). The rhizome in M. vaginalis is short while in M. hastata it is longer and branched. We will also discover Bhat Meteka in upcoming article which relatively more studied

📄🔬Documentation Status:

Ajinai is well-documented as a flowering plant in scientific databases. However, detailed documentation on its food utilization is limited.

💡 Culinary Uses: The flower buds and leaves of are edible. The inflorescence is fried and used in chutneys, while the juice of the leaves is applied for curing boils. The rhizome also has value as cattle feed.
