2 Mistakes That Stall Team Progress

2 Mistakes That Stall Team Progress

Here's the thing.

Changing a team is hard.

It takes effort.

However, it can be done.

My advice to you, don't make it harder than it needs to be.

Here are 2 things that leaders and teams do that keep them stuck.

1. Pseudo team building

Many teams I come across have some sort of Monday morning meeting that contains a self-development component.

Although I applaud the effort, we need to be clear about the impact of such sessions.

It's not team development.

It's self-development at scale.

For a team to improve we need to work on specific team matters.

This means having difficult conversations and creating the space for team learning and interaction.

2. Lack of perseverance

Traditional team building has created the expectation that team change can happen over a weekend. Or during one workshop.

This is far from true.

Change takes time.

I have been thinking a lot about a quote from Voltaire that goes, "No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking."

It's a great reminder that what we want lies on the other side of sustained thinking, sustained effort, sustained iteration.

In our case, what we want is to continuously move our teams towards transformation.

But remember, it's not one big push.

It's many small nudges.

Sustained effort.

Here's to building better teams.
