Hey, everyone. Hope you’re well. Just typing away on the iPad, as I write the next newsletter. For this article, I’ll be riffing on the second illustration/concept piece I did for a film client.
Interior scene. Clubbers on the dance floor. Full shot. Read the script and picked this scene to illustrate. The director needed some concept art/illustrations as part of a package along with storyboards. As I finished up the piece, I thought to myself, I want to take another crack at this. So, a third illustration came down the pipeline and I will be posting that next month.
Out of my focus, had to make sure that there was a sense of foreground and background. Made sure that all the visual elements in the illustration overlapped. Looked at reference photos regarding clothes, fashion gear etc. Always keep photo references handy when you need them. They will help you out in a pinch.
Anything else? On a French New Wave kick. Watching Godard, Truffaut and Vida films. Reading some Bradbury, essays on the art of writing. Always looking at comic books. Recently, Kirby and Toth. Watching films, reading comic books. Studying the shots. Trying to improve visual storytelling skills. Study the Masters.
Guess that’s about it. Drop a line if you want to chat and talk to you soon. Stay safe.
