Most people are dissatisfied with their job – but the thought of starting a business is frightening
Psychologists estimate that as many as four out of five (80%) employees are actively dissatisfied with their jobs. Many people look to starting a business of their own as a way to achieve happiness in the world, to take charge of their lives, to demonstrate their effectiveness in the world, and to find fulfillment.
Being your own boss can be extremely satisfying, but it also comes with the stressful responsibility of making and living with your decisions. The right decisions make you money, and the wrong decisions will cost you money. Too many bad decisions can force a business to close.
For most people, the thought of starting a business is frightening, because it forces them to come to grips with the feasibility of their idea, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. This can lead to self-doubts and second-guessing regarding success, financial security, and failure.
Fear perpetuates from the fact most people have no background in entrepreneurship. Their education and social conditioning prepared them for employment, to take orders and follow them vs. thinking like an entrepreneur.

75% of all self-made millionaires achieved their wealth by owning a business
Some entrepreneurs have failed, while others have produced some of the best and brightest ideas of our times, building empires from their dreams and changing the way business is viewed. If you are like most business people, you’re in business to make money and to be your own boss.
Research shows that 75% of all self-made millionaires achieved their wealth by owning a business. Because of this, most people think that being an entrepreneur is only about getting rich. Yes, indeed we all like the money, what the money can do and how we can spend it, but few business people would say those are the only reasons to start a business.
So if you want to create the income, lifestyle and freedom you want… consider a side hustle, advises Hays chief executive Alistair Cox, “Stepping out on your own and generating an additional income from doing something you’re interested in… will teach you a whole myriad of skills.”
“If we all did things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” – Thomas A. Edison, inventor
The characteristics of a successful entrepreneur
So, what kind of person becomes an entrepreneur? What features must successful entrepreneurs have? Whether people are born with these traits or learn them is material for good debate, but we do know from numerous studies that successful entrepreneurs share several important personality characteristics.
The one quality found most commonly was “the desire to win.” Successful entrepreneurs are doers, people who make things happen, and they want to know how they are doing. They are independent souls setting their own goals. They are not satisfied with towing the line, working for others. They are strong leaders navigating a new company through the travails and risks of starting up. They enjoy working hard, and do so long before becoming entrepreneurs. If you’re not used to working hard, don’t think you are suddenly going to acquire the habit when you start a business.
In the beginning, you will experience a vast change in your available personal free time. You will have to make great sacrifices spending more time building your business and less time on leisure activities. The emotional toll on your family will be an even greater sacrifice. Spending every waking hour with business problems may not leave you with much energy and interest to deal with family problems and quality time together.
If you don’t share most of the characteristics just described, then perhaps starting a busienss is not right for you. But if you have most of the required personal qualities, you will be ready to make the necessary sacrifices to succeed as an entrepreneur.
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” – Vincent Lombardi, pro football coach
The 20 body parts used to win in business
You need to fully assess your personality traits and skills readiness when starting a business because, in addition to being positive and having the drive to put your dreams into action and the energy to persist, you must possess human relations skills. Interpersonal skills, like being cooperative, tactful, emotionally stable and considerate, are vital to being successful in business.
Your ability to communicate well will support your ability to sell effectively, negotiate good deals with suppliers, empower employees to improve productivity, persuade financial institutions and investors to provide the financing you need. Just as importantly, innovative and analytical thinking combined with technical knowledge of your business is essential in growing your enterprise.
To be an entrepreneur, you have to be an organizer, backer, administrator, manager, and promoter. You may also have to be a mother and father and deal with the personal challenges of those in your organization. You will have to become more than you are right now. You must become a leader so others can contribute to your success.
Being a leader means providing an environment where people can do their job well, free to think, innovate and help solve problems. In a way, this takes the burden off you as an entrepreneur. You don’t have to have all the answers and be the smartest one on the block just because you are the boss. You simply need to know how to create the conditions for others to be successful in contributing their best.
Being an entrepreneur places high demands on you. And building a successful business will require you to use your body in ways you have never done before. See image below for a complete breakdown of the 20 body parts you need to use to win in business:
As a business owner, you will have many different responsibilities regarding the operation of your company and have to cope with a variety of situations, some of which you will have only limited experience in handling. Be resourceful and partner with others to fill in the gaps to ensure your company’s success.
