#20 - Visualisation: A Tool for Success at Work
Welcome to the 20th edition of The MAD Performance Newsletter, in which I'll share thoughts and resources that can help you towards a more Mindful and Deliberate way of approaching life, leadership, learning and high performance.
Many athletes I work with rely on a powerful mental tool: visualisation. By vividly picturing their performance before it happens, athletes create a mental “rehearsal” that enhances their readiness and builds confidence.
The benefits of visualisation, however, extend beyond sports. In professional settings, visualisation can be a powerful way to prepare for presentations, meetings, or challenging tasks. It can also be a valuable tool for combating negative self-talk and managing doubts. Here’s how to use visualisation to maximise your potential at work.
Visualisation as a Preparation Tool
Just as athletes mentally rehearse a game or routine, professionals can visualise their performance before a key meeting, presentation, 'difficult' conversation or class.
Imagine yourself going through each step of the task, from setting up the room to delivering your points clearly and confidently. Visualise the responses you might receive and how you’ll handle questions, feedback or 'interesting' behaviour. Visualise yourself at your best.
Pay attention to small details—your body language, your tone, how you feel, what you can smell and hear, even how you breathe. By mentally experiencing success, you reinforce positive neural pathways, making it more likely you’ll perform well in the real situation.

Visualisation as a Tool to Combat Negative Self-Talk
Self-doubt is common, particularly before challenging tasks. Negative self-talk often stems from fear of failure or insecurity. Visualisation can help reframe these thoughts, providing a powerful counter to doubts.
When doubts arise, visualise a successful version of yourself handling the situation. Picture yourself overcoming obstacles with ease, staying calm under pressure, and confidently delivering results. Focus on the feeling of accomplishment that follows. This not only reduces anxiety but also disrupts the loop of negative thoughts, helping you regain control over your mindset.
How to use it:
Building Confidence with Regular Visualisation
Making visualisation a regular habit strengthens its benefits. By consistently rehearsing your ideal outcomes, you train your mind to expect success, which gradually builds genuine confidence. This practice is especially useful before recurring challenges, such as weekly meetings or high-stakes presentations.
Whether you’re aiming to feel more prepared or combatting last-minute self-doubt, visualisation offers a proactive approach to achieving your best. By picturing your success, you’re not only more likely to perform well but also to build lasting confidence that propels you forward in your career.
