Your Comfort Zone = Dead Zone
Last week I was in Chicago to facilitate a session as part of Knight Digital Media Center's Digital Strategy for Community Foundations and Nonprofits. The workshop topics included trends in digital media consumption, social media, engagement on mobile devices and a variety of community foundation projects funded by the Knight Community Information Challenge. I was part of the first-day that featured mobile expert Amy Gahran and Lee Raine, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. Participants were a mix of CEOs and senior staff.
Amy Gahran advised the participants in the room that if they were uncomfortable using mobile (most were not of the mobile generation), that they should step outside of their comfort zones and just do everything on their mobile phones for the week. Amy Gahran also takes her own advice, having taken an advanced coding course and creating t-shirt with the above slogan for herself.
I did a workshop on leading on digital platforms for CEOs - which is all about that topic - finding the time to explore new strategies and tools.
If you are a nonprofit or foundation leader, how have you stepped outside your comfort zone when comes to having your organization incorporate digital tools and strategies? How have you gotten past any personal discomforts to pave the way to lead on digital platforms?

11yWhat comfort here mean ? Comfortable working conditions? Comfortable place ? or Comfortable work where one need not to bother self much in other words one does not need to learn any more and trouble ones own mind or engage self in research. It means it is about physical & mental comfort right? But if you are engaged in the work which you like physical discomfort doesn't bother you much even sometimes you are ready to bear headache, backache or neck-ache. It is all because you love the work even full of discomfort because it brings satisfaction and happiness to you.In another situation on has secured a very high position in a well installed office. All the gadgets of comfort are made available there many subordinates to follow your orders but the work doesn't interests you therefore you feel uncomfortable or unhappy even if surrounded by the thing/persons working to bring you comforts Now the person even being in comfort zone doesn't remain happy and tries to find the other way to get pleasure and thus he breaks the comfort zone.

11yI once left a job because I realized I could do it in my sleep. Challenge and change are essential to life, not just to work. I now use my Note II more than I use my computer, unless I'm working on a novel. That was a big shift for me.
