2022’s Impact in Review

2022’s Impact in Review

2022 was a year to remember at digitalundivided. It was a year of continued transformation that met the needs and greatest concerns of our founders and the inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem at large. We demystified stereotypes and made a new way forward for women of color founders to increase their visibility and the value of the companies they’ve proudly founded.

It can be frustrating to be a women of color founder in today’s environment.  Often less accomplished male-led companies come to the table with fewer proof points of their success, yet are rewarded with more investment. On one hand it’s a setup for exhaustion.  The bar is often set unbelievably high for women of color seeking funding. And the truth is, I’m not sure anyone actually expects us to meet these outlandish requirements. But that’s the thing about women of color; though we are often underestimated, many of us have been working hard for years to achieve a fraction of the funding and trust. That’s the only way we’ve been able to get a seat at any of these tables — out-working and out-performing ceilings we don’t fully understand.

So when others set the bar ridiculously high thinking they’re setting us up to fail, they often end up positioning us to walk away with a new set of unbelievable wins.

This year we witnessed this in action for ourselves and our community. We watched women of color founders who’ve had to work twice as hard to prove their worth take their incredible wins and upleveled status into new rooms this year.

Our 2022 founders, cohort members, and game-changers made absolute magic this year.

We’re so proud to be a part of these founder journeys and to be able to amplify their achievements through our shared partnership.

They tallied their wins, calculated their worth, and demanded more.

And it’s about time.

Our five research-driven programs are designed to support women of color founders at every stage of their journey and entrepreneurial life cycle.  Here are some of our 2022 digitalundivided wins.

Idea Stage

START supports founders in the idea stage and is our flagship early-stage program. In 2022, we celebrated 10 years of START programming over 200 businesses served, and 100% overall program satisfaction.

In December we hosted DEMO DAY for our START cohort in partnership with She Runs It.

This particular cohort was near and dear to my marketing heart as we focused on early stage founders in media, marketing and tech.

Courtney Culmer of Uplevel Communications won the grand prize - a  $5K grant made possible by our partner She Runs It. The remaining entrepreneurs each received grants of  $2K to put towards their businesses.

Early Stage

BIG

2022 was a year for our founders to Go BIG or go home.

We ran 5 cohorts and served over 90 businesses around the country through BIG - our 12-week pre-accelerator that introduces a culturally relevant Lean Startup methodology to high-growth startups. Accepting less than 10% of applicants, BIG is one of the most competitive incubator programs in the nation.

93% of our BIG participants launched their MVP for an average 60% growth in revenue this year.

Growth Stage

BREAKTHROUGH

Our growth-stage program BREAKTHRUGH celebrated its second year with cohorts in 4 U.S. cities. We  served 70 businesses and awarded $350k to women of color who were on the path to break through.  Developed in partnership with JPMorgan Chase’s Advancing Black Pathways the program helps entrepreneurs scale their businesses past the five-figure mark over five sessions.

High-Growth Stage

Do You Fellowship

In 2020, Project Diane found that 93 Black women and 90 Latinas had raised over $1M in venture funding. So we launched our Do You Fellowship - a one-year fellowship aimed to help entrepreneurs reach the $1M mark.

Over the course of the year, we were thrilled to witness 105% revenue growth for our first cohort. Also, four of our participating founders were able to reach the ($1MM+) million dollar mark after utilizing our industry-led workshops, mentorship, business advisory, office hours and other resources.

Industry Changers

The New C-Suite

For the second year in a row, in partnership with Cosmopolitan, digital undivided honored 10 women of color who are disrupting their industries. This national recognition led to new retail partnerships, international expansion, and additional media exposure for the recognized founders.

Over two years, our 20 total founders boast $58M raised in funding and reinforced our belief that women of color founders are ready to thrive if given access to the right relationships and platform to advance their work.

Our Thought Leadership

We expanded our thought leadership through four key event series: The New C-Suite recognizes 10 women of color each year who are disrupting their industries. Undivided We Rise Summit brings together thought leaders and influential voices who are redefining global innovation and entrepreneurship to bring awareness to our vision of a world where all women of color own their work and their worth.

We also had two event series - first the Founder’s Playbook: FundHER Forum - intimate events across the U.S. preparing women founders to become investment-ready by demystifying the VC ecosystem.

Our InvestHER Power Series, in partnership with the Nasdaq Foundation convened inspiring Latina and Black women investors to openly explore and discuss their investing journeys.

Media Wins

We garnered visibility and demonstrated our thought leadership in numerous ways. In addition to our innovative programs and event series, in 2022 we earned over 3 billion media impressions with interviews and features in Cosmopolitan Magazine, FORTUNE, Forbes, and the Wall Street Journal among others.

Our Growth

As CEO, I’m thrilled by our wins but most proud of our growth. In the last two years, we’ve tripled our number of research reports, doubled our internal team, and grown the organization’s revenue by 5 times.

We’ve added over 65 philanthropic and corporate partners, awarded over half a million dollars to women of color founders, and helped the businesses we’ve supported grow by 55%.

We’ve taken risks to innovate. We’ve expanded the team considerably. We’ve boldly courted new partners. These numbers reflect the payoff in our approach, and the hard work of our team month over month.

Cheers to my incredible team for this year’s success! Here’s to more!
