2023 Coaching Reflections with Pivot Coach, Adam

Adam is one of Pivot’s education experts, helping to deliver exceptional coaching calls and empower Pivot Schools with data-driven insights for the Student Survey on Teaching tool. With more than a decade of experience as a teacher and educational leader, Adam is ideally placed to drive conversations supporting continuous improvement in schools.

We asked Adam to reflect on his coaching experiences across 2023 and identify some trends that can help schools considering (or already using) student survey tools.

Reflection 1: Coaching Calls are not just for schools new to surveys

“Schools approach coaching calls with a range of experiences and contextual differences. Some schools have recently partnered with Pivot and are eager to see what the data tells them. Others are hoping they can get ‘hard data’ for something they’ve suspected for a while.”

Schools that have been with Pivot (for many years) might be looking to dig into their data in new and exciting ways, and coaching calls are the perfect opportunity to explore ‘what could be’.

Reflection 2: It is important to set and focus on data-driven goals

Schools know what their data is saying, but they get to decide which questions are in their line of focus at the moment, and which strategies they are putting in place to improve in these areas. Through the use of standard or additional questions, they can ask, ‘What has our impact been? Did our students respond to the changes we made in the way we thought they would?’.

Adam says, “Through coaching calls, I am able to help shape the strategic direction of the school based on what they find valuable, and reach agreement on how Pivot data can support them reaching their goals.”

Reflection 3: Teacher and Leader engagement is key to success

“The schools that got the most out of working with Pivot were those who had a clear strategic vision. When survey results day comes around, staff are excited - it’s like Christmas - because they can’t wait to see the impact from the changes they have made.

If they aren’t seeing the results they expected, then they can make a decision to persist with changes and stick them out for a bit longer (collecting data as they go), or to adjust their approach.”
