2024 IoT Predictions - The hope will be Generative AI

2024 IoT Predictions - The hope will be Generative AI

When I wrote my first article on LinkedIn on May 15, 2014 “By 2025, machines will decide our job”, I didn't know what impact it was going to have, so I barely wrote any text. I soon discovered that with my wonderful network of contacts I could spread my vision of IoT technology and that it would help me create my personal brand after the unwanted departure from Microsoft.

Over time I learned: which articles liked the most, which ones could have more Likes or how to generate more comments and therefore more views, but always trying to maintain my own and unmistakable style.

Without a doubt one of the topics that has generated the most attention from my followers has been related to Predictions. Almost everyone liked to know the future of IoT but only a few of us dared to predict it. And of course, almost all of us was wrong. At least in the most important thing: time versus expectations relationship.

So, for years, when November arrived, I began searching for articles from other IoT experts and analysts and added them to my article, giving my vision of the predictions expressed in all the content I analysed.

The interest that this type of posts aroused was so evident, that I repeated the same scheme successfully for years:

  1. 2021:  2021 IoT Trends and Predictions: I expect an exciting year for IoT advancements in 2021, and you?
  2. 2020:  2020 IoT Trends and Predictions: Be prepared for the IoT Tsunami” I wrote that we should be prepared for the Internet of Things (IoT) tsunami, but it won't be in 2020". I didn't imagine the special circumstances of the year of the COVID-19.
  3. 2019: Yes, we continue making IoT Predictions in 2019.  Also this year , as part of the @Ecosystm Analyst team, I wrote the report Top 5 IoT predictions for Europe in 2019
  4. 2017: Have we already bored of predicting IoT?”
  5. 2016: Will finally be 2017, the year of Internet of Things? I do not think so

In April 2021 I joined NI and I had to put aside my dedication to evangelizing IoT, selling IoT solutions, and providing IoT consulting and business development services. Although those who follow my post know that I have never completely strayed away from this area and I have continued to share articles of interest (increasingly harder to find, by the way) to the extent that I have been able to.

The expectation is not the same as we had at the beginning, due to the continuous emergence of other trends as Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Metaverse, ChatGPT, etc, but I hope that this article with the IoT predictions in 2024 will once again be appreciated by my thousands of followers.

There's nothing more to speak of. Continue reading to learn about some of the predictions that I have considered most relevant so far:

Internet of Things Predictions in 2024:

  • IoT Devices:  We have been hearing for so long that connected cars, medical devices, video cameras, logistics sensors, retail sensors and devices, wearables, smart home or smart cities will be the drivers of new advances and sophisticated IoT devices. However, IoT devices face the same problems as always, battery life, security, authentication, standardization and interoperability, scalability, and cost. Great advances are difficult to develop. We have already seen it with the latest series of smart phones. Maybe by 2030 we will have AI embedded in most IoT devices and using 5G, but we have to wait.As it could not be otherwise, in 2024 we will see at CES many devices with the addition of Generative AI. In addition, there will be a significant increase in sport wearables. Special mention for advances in Edge Computing devices especially in autonomous vehicles and Smart manufacturing and new sensors used in sustainable IoT and the circular economy.

  • IoT Connectivity: I stick with this forecast from last year from the firm Counterpoint: “Global cellular IoT connections grew strongly at 29% YoY to reach 2.7 billion in 2022. They are expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.8% to reach an installed base of over 6 billion by 2030. I leave the calculations for 2024 to you.As the cellular IoT module market continues to mature, we can expect more consolidations aimed at providing improved solutions designed to optimize energy consumption, reduce waste,  promote sustainable living and maintaining competitiveness against other non-cellular connectivity technologies. We have been hearing for several years that eSIMs represent the future of SIM cards. Experts believe that the market will continue to grow CAGR of 24.5 until 2028, so everything is calm here. The industry forecasts suggest there will be 3.4 billion eSIM-enabled devices by 2025 and the list of eSIM-ready devices continues to rise. As eSIMs become increasingly popular, telcos are already thinking outside the box to identify innovative ways to capitalize on eSIMs and enhance their current offerings.iSIM opens a new world of opportunity for mobile and IoT innovation. The great hope is in connected cars, but we have already seen that this industry takes its time to make changes in its decisions, so in 2024 we will only see some luxury models with this technology. In 2024 car manufacturers will have to partner with application development companies for autonomous and connected cars so that users can consider new feature when purchasing these new vehicles. Mass adoption not before 2030.

  • IoT Platforms: It no longer matters if there are 1000, 700 or 300 IoT platforms in the world. When hyperscalers like Microsoft, IBM, SAP or Ericsson decide to close their business units, there is only room for specialists, as all of us experts expected to happen. In 2024, IoT Platforms look to improve functionality. The IoT platforms will offer no-code software to design AI models and data pipelines, ensuring that IoT becomes an achievable reality for businesses of all sizes.

The five key IoT platform market trends for 2024 are as follows:

  1. Increased Adoption of Edge Computing in IoT Platforms
  2. Growth of White-label IoT Platforms Popularity
  3. Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  4. Expansion of IoT Platforms in Industrial Applications
  5. Rise of 5G Connectivity in Enabling IoT Platforms

  • IoT Smart Cities o Smart Territories: This year I did not attend the Smart City Expo World Congress | SCEWC 5 – 7 NOV 2024 in Barcelona so I base my predictions on what I have seen in many cities in Spain and the World after COVID. Public administrations decide their investments ensuring that citizens' taxes are used in the services most valued by them or the services that will give them the most votes in the next elections. In mega-cities that means investing in solutions that solve the main problems: mobility, security, sustainability, pollution and cost savings and that do not involve eliminating jobs. Smart Cities are going to need more sophisticated IoT devices that can help manage the resources of a megacity population. But this trend will take time. My prediction is that we will continue to see investments in 5G infrastructure in smart cities and smart territories. Expect to see a proliferation of smart sensors and devices that monitor everything from traffic flow to air quality, enhancing data-driven decision-making for city planners. And finally expect that Smart Cities will thrive in 2024 with cutting-edge AI features.

  • IoT System Integrators: System integrators play a crucial role in the successful implementation and growth of IoT (Internet of Things) solutions. To expand their IoT business in 2024, system integrators should focus on several key areas:o   Industry Expertise: Demonstrating deep domain knowledge and expertise in specific industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, retail, logistics, transportation, smart cities, etc., customizing IoT and Analytics solutions and services and providing flexible deployment options, such as cloud-based, edge computing, or hybrid solutions that meet the specific requirements of clients in these industries. o   Partnerships and Ecosystem Collaboration: Collaborating with strategic partnerships in their IoT ecosystem to provide access to a broader range of technologies, expand service offerings, and enhance the overall value proposition for customers. o   Security and Data Privacy: Addressing security concerns is critical in the IoT space. System integrators should focus on providing robust security measures to protect IoT devices, networks, and data from potential cyber threats. Assuring clients of strong security measures and compliance with data privacy regulations can be a significant differentiator.

In summary, 2024 will be another year of consolidation and specialization of niche IoT companies. We will see sustained growth in all areas of IoT from devices to consulting. New actors such as Generative AI will be added to the IoT technology bandwagon, which will gradually give way to the development of solutions and services that solve the problems of companies, cities, and people. The good news for those of us who believe in IoT is that without talking about IoT we will see this technology invisibly in a multitude of products and solutions.

My wish for 2024 is that we can see many xIoT as a Service Providers in different sectors. At the end of the day, isn't that kind of business models what we were looking for?

Stay tuned for the comments where I will add more predictions as I collect them.
