The 2024 Most Admired SSOs/GBS: Innovation & Excellence at the Forefront
Every year, SSON Research & Analytics releases its highly anticipated list of the Top 20 Most Admired Shared Services Organizations (SSO) and Global Business Services (GBS). Now in its 8th year, this prestigious study has become the gold standard for benchmarking excellence, offering unparalleled insights into the shared services and GBS world. The Top 20 honorees are selected from a pool of over 100 standout organizations that were invited to participate in the extensive performance benchmarking study.
The organizations selected aren’t just leaders; they are innovators, pushing boundaries in operational excellence, technological integration, and service delivery.
A Glimpse Into the Future of GBS Maturity
This year’s winners highlight the growing maturity of the models. 60% of the Top 20 have been in operation for over a decade, signaling stability and resilience. Yet, 20% are newer players, established within the last 4-6 years, proving that fresh perspectives can drive exceptional performance. This blend of veterans and emerging leaders demonstrates the sector's dynamism and constant evolution.
An interesting trend among these organizations is the rise of the cost-plus billing model, now adopted by over a third, reflecting its adaptability as a financial framework in the evolving business landscape.
Sourcing Models & Value-Add Capabilities
A staggering 80% of the Top 20 rely on a captive sourcing model, with 53% fully committed and 27% incorporating selective outsourcing. For the remaining 20%, a hybrid sourcing model dominates.
Regardless of the sourcing approach, Centers of Excellence (CoEs) are crucial in building capabilities and driving value-add.
Breaking Boundaries: Global Reach and Service Expansion
These organizations aren't confined to local markets; 100% of the Top 20 deliver services in multiple countries. A remarkable 70% operate in over 50 countries, and 20% have expanded their footprint to over 120. This global reach underscores their ability to navigate and thrive in complex, multinational environments.
As for the size of their centers, 16% are smaller (250 FTEs), 32% mid-size(250-1,000 FTEs), and 53% as larger centers (1,000+ FTEs). Larger centers have grown significantly, from 23% in 2022 to 54% in 2024, particularly across the Asia Pacific (30%), EMEA (18%), and Latin America (6%).
The Digital Powerhouse Fueling GBS Excellence
Technology is the linchpin of success for the Top 20. Every winner has fully embraced ERP platforms, RPA, and workflow automation. Over 90% have integrated advanced technologies such as AI, analytics, cloud platforms, OCR, process mining, and data visualization.

But what truly sets them apart is their pioneering use of cutting-edge innovations. 85% are harnessing the power of generative AI, intelligent chatbots, low-code platforms, and machine learning. This technological leap is driving unprecedented efficiencies, from AI-driven process discovery (up 25% year-over-year) to cognitive machine reading.
Global & Center Level Metrics: Performance Benchmarks
In 2024, SSON Research & Analytics’ State of the Shared Services and Outsourcing Industry Global Market Report revealed that 63% of companies have successfully integrated Order-to-Cash (OTC) into their operations, through full automation remains a challenge.
Global performance benchmarks for Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) among the Top 20 Most Admired SSOs show that the top quartile ranges from 15 to 30 days, the median is 30 to 45 days, and the bottom quartile is 45 to 60 days. These figures highlight the varying efficiency levels and the need for ongoing improvements in financial operations.
In Procure-to-Pay, cost per invoice center metrics reveal that while roughly a quarter of the top 20 have costs in the $1-$2 range, over 50% still operate above $2 per invoice.
With overall attrition, the median is also top quartile: 8-11%, and nearly 40% of the Top 20 fall within this range. Additionally, 18% of the top 20 are experiencing lower attrition rates, below 8%, while 45% have attrition rates higher than 11%. Leading organizations are developing robust mentoring programs and internships that incorporate the latest advanced technologies and career shadowing. Engaging employees in more purposeful, value-add work significantly enhances the employee experience.
