2024 is a wrap
In a year dominated by shifting global agendas, energy and climate crises, and increasing demands for climate action, green solutions and technologies have never held a higher priority on the international stage. We’ve felt this throughout the year, as demand for Danish green expertise and know-how continues to grow.
Let’s revisit some of the best moments for the green state of Denmark in 2024.
Setbacks, milestones and world premieres
While the year wasn’t without its challenges, such as the unresolved Danish offshore wind tender and a lack of decisive outcomes from the biodiversity and climate summits, several green advancements are worth celebrating.
The year began with the launch of Viking Link, the world’s longest electricity cable. Officially inaugurated in March, this interconnector between Denmark and the UK marked an important step toward integrated, green energy systems across borders.
A world-first also came this summer, as Denmark unveiled a historic agreement aimed at transforming land use and agricultural production. The Green Tripartite Agreement, developed in partnership with industry, agriculture, and environmental organisations, made Denmark the first country in the world to introduce an agricultural CO2 emissions tax.
Additionally, former Danish Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen stepped into his new role as EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing on December 1, taking on a crucial position as Denmark prepares to lead the EU Presidency in the second half of 2025.
Partnerships and knowledge sharing on the international stage
For State of Green, 2024 stood out as a year of partnerships, evidenced by our support at 47 events and conferences worldwide. Highlights included the IWA World Water Congress in Toronto, Green Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, and the ICLEI European Congress in Aalborg. We also led the first official Danish delegation to the biodiversity COP16 in Colombia, as well as co-organising over 40 side events at COP29 in Baku, demonstrating Denmark’s leadership in areas such as decarbonisation, biodiversity restoration, and climate finance.
During New York Climate Week in September, biodiversity and green finance took centre stage. State of Green hosted a roundtable and networking sessions, fostering dialogue on critical sustainability topics. This commitment to driving impactful discussions continued at COP29, where we facilitated over 100 high-level speakers at the Danish Pavilion.
New paths and familiar faces
This year also marked several changes for State of Green - both new and familiar ones.
His Majesty King Frederik X returned as our patron, continuing a legacy of supporting the global promotion of Danish green technologies.
In spring, we unveiled a refreshed brand narrative with ten new focus areas that reflect not only Denmark’s traditional strengths but also emerging growth sectors. This updated direction underscores Denmark’s holistic solutions and cross-sector collaboration, positioning us to amplify the nation’s green leadership even further in the years ahead.
On behalf of the entire State of Green team, we thank you for your collaboration and support throughout 2024. We look forward to continue working towards a sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient society in 2025.
