I am going to say something a little provocative; in blueptining systems we build over the next few years I can imagine these AI systems will have emotions asan Inseparable component of the design of those systems... why would they have emotions? because they will be driven by objectives you give them, a goal that they have to accomplish- a task and their purpose is to accomplish this task subject to guard rails that you know are hardwired into their design . AND for them to do this they need a number of components :the first component they need is a way to determine whether this goal that we give them was accomplished

AND what they also need is what we call a world model (humans have in a prefrontal cortex that allows us to imagine what the consequences of our actions are going to be and it's what allows us to plan a sequence of actions to accomplish a particular goal ...now if you have this ability to predict ahead of time what a sequence of action is going to uh produce then you can predict whether a goal is going to be satisfied or not and to predict if the outcome is going to be good or bad ; if you predict it's going to be bad you feel fear ,if you predict it's going to be good it's more like Elation ....right so the ability to predict and then to act so as to accomplish those those predictions produces the equivalent of emotions... so AI systems that are smart enough that are capable of reasoning and planning that have World models will have emotions.

NB Lecunn is longest running academic contributor still at peak of university New York University and hyperscale influencer Zuckenbergers chief AI adiser (Meta). Lecunn has advised meta to lead on open ai models (see comments on dacebook Llama 3) - my interopretaion of his view of ai emotions is you cant be a teacher of children over the next 7 years and not be ready for helping the first generation to grow uo with emotional machines as well as emotional human friends.
