24: For the mommy...

24: For the mommy...

I don't know, maybe moms don't say that anymore - "for the mommy, for the daddy, for the doggy" while approaching their child with a threatening spoon of food - yes, I did mean to say "threatening". While working on my master's thesis I started seeing the evidence - and I still see - moms are still doing this. Perhaps we still have a powerful, ancient need to feed our children - even when facing all external cues that this is not necessary anymore, that what you are feeding is not really a food, and that this is coercion first of all.

In academic research we use term "maternal control of eating (as if this sounds somewhat better), and this is what we know:

 ·      when parents strictly control what and how their children eat - parents probably assume that they need to help children choose what, when and how much to eat, and do not allow them to do that on their own. But this is when children start choosing more often fatty, high calorie food, eat a less varied diet, and the sensitivity of the children to the inner cues of hunger and satiety is disturbed (1)

·      when some sort of food is restricted or forbidden to children, then children tend to choose it more often when they get the chance to eat it. We don't even need studies for this... "Forbidden fruit..." (2)

·      opposite is true as well, when children are forced to eat, they tend to eat less (3)

·      if moms "help" their daughters to eat in the childhood, later the adult daughters cannot control their own eating and tend to be overweight; children also are sensitive to size of the portion and availability of the attractive food nearby (4)

·      mothers are more often targeted in the research of the influence on eating (sorry, no reference, intuition-based statement and a topic for further research - yet number of results with keyword "maternal influence eating" is at least twice larger). Moms and dads may differ in their attitudes towards healthy eating, but they force their children to eat all the same. Moms say that they feel more responsible and watch more closely eating of their daughters, and dads who are not satisfied with their body image pay more attention to eating of their sons (5).

So... I finish wishing you to not overdo with helping your children. It is better to help them learn eating on their own, healthy food - and do not forget that they copy your behaviour with lots of love.
