25 Shocking facts about Swami Vivekananda no one knows!
Happy Swami Vivekananda Jayanti
On the auspicious occasion of birthday of Swami Vivekananda ie 12 January :- 1. The man who introduced Hindu Vedanta philosophy to the West was almost a pauper at the time of passing away of his guru Sri Ramakrishna. He decided to walk the length and breadth of India to know the problems of his countrymen, because he felt that a sanyasin staying at a single place, would, in course of time, be inflicted by the ills of society, whereas a sanyasin, always on the move, will shield himself from the ills afflicting society.
2. He compared this with a flowing river, which washes away all dirt, and cleanses itself continuously. Narendranath Dutta (later Swami Vivekananda), decided to go on an all India tour with his associates Rakhal Chandra Ghosh, Tarak Nath Ghoshal and Baburam Ghosh, 15 days after the passing away of Sri Ramakrishna.
3. 1887: Vivekananda was walking with Swami Premananda on the streets of Varanasi, when a group of monkeys chased them. The two sanyasins ran for their lives. Suddenly, an old sanyasin shouted: Stop, stand up against the animals. Both the sanyasins stopped in their tracks, and the pack of monkeys also stopped eyeing both of them. Vivekananda later narrated this in New York. His advice was : “Always stand up to adversities. Face obstacles with courage. If we want to attain salvation, we have to face up to nature, we can’t run away from nature. If we want to remove fear, obstacles and ignorance, we have to declare war against them.”
4. 1888: While walking the remaining 30 miles between Agra and Vrindavan, the swami saw a man sitting on the roadside, smoking chillum (ganja: cannabis). Suddenly, Vivekananda said, I’ll also smoke. When he sought the chillum from the man, he shied away saying “Maharaj, you are a sadhu, and I am a bhangi (low caste)”. The swami stood up to leave, but suddenly, he thought “I am a sanyasin, I have left all castes and family ties aside. Why shouldn’t I smoke a bhangi’s chillum”. Vivekananda began to smoke chillum. Later, while mentioning the incident, Vivekananda said: “Never hate your fellow beings. All of them are children of God.”
5. 1888: While circumambulating the Govardhan hill, Vivekananda suddenly decided, I shall stop begging food from people. Let people give me food on their own. On day one, till afternoon, nobody offered food. As the swami began walking with pangs of hunger, it began to drizzle. Suddenly somebody called him from behind, but to test the man’s patience, Vivekananda began to run. The man also began to run after him. Finally, he caught hold of the swami and said, Maharaj, please accept this food. Tears flowed down Vivekananda’s eyes. He knew that God was with him all the time.
6. While going to Haridwar, the swami met Sharat Chandra Gupta, an assistant station master at Hathras station. He became an ardent devotee of the swami, just by looking into Vivekananda’s large eyes. When the swami began to leave Hathras, Gupta insisted on accompanying him. Vivekananda initially declined, but sensing his insistence, he gave him Diksha and named him Swami Sadananda. This disciple used to describe himself as “Vivekananda’s dog”. He used to tell others :”He (Vivekananda) is such a great guru that he even lifted my shoes, and whenever I was sick, he used to help me. He is lovable, full of love, the very embodiment of love”.
7. 1890: On January 22, Vivekananda reached Ghazipur in eastern UP. He had heard of a great baba, Powhari Baba, who lived in a cave, and used to consume negligible quantity of food. On February 4, swamiji wrote to Pramadadas Mitra saying he met the baba who was a “mahapurush”(great saint). Vivekananda decided to take Diksha from the baba, but on the preceding night, he saw in his dream Sri Ramakrishna standing silently near his bed, watching him sadly. The swami temporarily abandoned his idea. For 21 nights, Vivekananda saw Sri Ramakrishna in his dream standing near his bed in a sad mood, and ultimately the sannyasin decided not to take diksha from the baba. He then wrote to Mitra: “I will now never go to any miyan (babas) now.”
8. 1890: On hearing of Swami Abhedananda’s illness, Vivekananda rushed from Ghazipur to Varanasi. On the way, he learnt, Sri Ramakrishna’s loyal servant Balaram Basu was no more. Tears welled in swamiji’s eyes. Pramadadas Mitra then told him, “expressing grief does not behove a sanyasin”. Swamiji replied aggressively: “What do you say? Should I cast off my heart just because I am a sanyasin. I don’t accept the sanyas that asks one to make one stone-hearted.”
9. Vivekananda stayed in Rishikesh for some time. He was once down with malaria. One day, the swami’s pulse beat and breathing nearly stopped. There was no physician nearby, and it was difficult to take swamiji to a doctor. The swami felt his end was near. Suddenly, an old sanyasin came into his cottage, gave him honey and Pipul churna and left. After a few moments, Vivekananda opened his eyes and became conscious. He said: “I felt during my unconsciousness that I had to do some great work for God. There is no rest, no peace for me till I complete that mission.”
10. In Meerut, Vivekananda used to borrow a volume each from the collected works of Sir John Lubbock. Swami Akhandananda used to bring the volumes for him from the city library, and Vivekananda used to return he volume the next day. The librarian expressed doubts whether Vivekananda was really reading the volumes back to back. One day, Vivekananda himself met the librarian, who asked him questions from the volumes. The librarian came to know that swamiji had not only read the volumes, but had memorized most of the texts.
11. 1891: The Dewan of the state of Alwar (now in Rajasthan), invited Vivekananda to the palace to meet the ruler. The ruler Mangal Singh asked Vivekananda: “I have heard you are a well learned man. You can easily earn money. Then why do you beg?” Vivekananda replied: “Can you tell me, why you ignore your state duties, have lunch and dinners with Englishmen and go on hunting?” .
12. The ruler then took a different tack and asked; “Well, swamiji, all these people worship idols, I don’t believe in idol worship. Can you tell me what will happen to me?” Vivekananda replied: “To each his own belief” and then suddenly asked an oil portrait of the maharaja removed from the wall. Swamiji asked the Dewan to spit on the portrait, and the latter baulked at the request.
13. The Dewan said “What are you saying, Swamiji? How can we spit on the portrait of our maharaja?” Swamiji replied: ‘it may be his portrait, but the maharajah is not physically inside this portrait. It can’t move or speak like the maharajah, and yet all of you are unwilling to spit on this portrait. Because you know that spitting on it would mean insulting your Lord, your maharajah.”
14. The swamiji then turned towards the maharajah and said: “ Well, Your Highness. Though you are not present inside this portrait, your men feel they will insult you if they spit on it. The same applies to people who worship idols made of wood, soil or stone. The idol only reminds them of their god. They do not worship wood, soil or stone, they worship their god through these idols.”
15. While going towards the Himalayas, swamiji alongwith swami Akhandananda landed, instead, at Vaidyanath dham(now in Jharkhand). The two sanyasins met Acharya Rajnarayan Basu of Brahmo Samaj. Vivekananda told his associate to introduce himself as a common sadhu who doesn’t understand English. During the meeting, Basu used the English word ‘plus’ and used both his fingers as a sign.
16. Vivekananda remained silent. Many years later, when Vivekananda achieved world fame for his great speeches before the English-speaking world, Rajnarayan Basu used to recount the incident saying “I was under the ipression that he didn’t know English.” (Courtesy: Shantanu Dutta Gupta’s article in Bartaman July 7, 2013).
17. The great figure who toured America and England and was known for his brilliant eloquence scored only a 47% at the university entrance level examination, a 46% in the FA (later this exam became Intermediate Arts or IA), and a 56% in his BA exam.
18. After his father’s death, the family was reduced to poverty. On many mornings Vivekananda would tell his mother that he had lunch invitations and he would go out so the others would get a larger share. He writes, “On such days, I had very little to eat, sometimes nothing at all. I was too proud to tell anyone…”
19. Taking advantage of his penury, many well-to-do ladies who were enamored of him tried to woo him. He preferred to starve than fall for such temptations. To one such lady he said, “Shun these worthless desires and call upon God.”
20. In spite of his BA degree, Narendranath (Vivekananda's real name) had to go from door to door in search of employment. He would loudly proclaim, “I am unemployed” to those who asked him. His faith in god shook and he began to tell people rather aggressively that God does not exist. One neighbor complained, “There is a young fellow living in that house. I have never seen such a conceited fellow! He is too big for his boots – and all because he has a BA degree! When he sings, he even strikes the table arrogantly and struts around smoking cheroot before all the elders…”
21. After the death of his paternal uncle Taraknath, his wife Gyanadasundari ousted Vivekananda’s family from their ancestral house and filed a suit in the court. Vivekananda fights the various litigation suits for 14 years and on the last Saturday of his life on 28 June 1902 he puts an end to the court case after paying some financial compensation.
22. When Jogendrabala, his sister committed suicide, Vivekananda told Yogen Maharaj, “Do you know why we Duttas are so talented in our thinking? Ours is a family with a history of suicides. There have been many in our family who have taken their own lives. We are eccentric. We do not think before we act. We simply do what we like and do not worry about the consequences.
23. The Maharaja of Khetri, Ajit Singh, used to send 100 rupees to Swamiji’s mother on a regular basis to help her tide over her financial problems. This arrangement was a closely guarded secret.
24. He simply worshiped his mother. After his Chicago fame, when Pratap Mazoomdar viciously condemned him, “He is nothing but a cheat and a fraud. He comes here to tell you that he is a fakir,” Vivekananda responded in a letter to Isabelle McKindley – “Now, I do not care what they even my own people say about me – except for one thing. I have an old mother. She has suffered much in her life and in the midst of all she could bear to give me up for the service of God and man; but to have given up the most beloved of her children – her hope – to live a beastly immoral life in a far-distant country, as Mazoomdar was telling in Calcutta, would have simply killed her.”
25. No women, not even his mother, were allowed inside the monastery. Once when he was delirious with fever his disciples fetched his mother. Seeing her Vivekananda shouted, “Why did you allow a woman to come in? I was the one who made the rule and it is for me that the rule is being broken!”
