25 YEARS OF LESBIAN LOVE: A LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF
February is LGBTQ+ History Month so to celebrate I hopped into my sapphic time machine, went back to 1997, and delivered a letter to myself where I broke some big news. To celebrate 25 years of love, get ready for a raunchy and romantic romp through television’s girl-on-girl past.
Dear Asha,
I want you to know you’re going to be okay, in fact more than okay. Your life will be full of so much love, and yes, that love will come from another woman, despite your doubts and fears right now.
I know that you’re struggling to feel ‘normal’, to feel that it’s alright to be attracted to and even fall in love with someone of the same sex, but please know that it’s possible. More than possible.
Not only that, but it’s right. Ignore what others may say and remember that where there’s love, there’s God.
Families come in so many different shapes and sizes, so know that your family will be perfect, and that doesn’t just mean family by blood. Be open to that and the prize will be limitless.
You deserve love and will find love that will make your heart sing every day, even on the most challenging days.
In the good times and bad you will be held, supported, adored, admired, celebrated and loved by another beautiful human, and one day you will feel brave enough to share that love story to inspire and give hope to others.
Standing the test of time, and with so much love in your heart, you will marry a beautiful woman and shout your love from the rooftops.
As I write, you are about to celebrate 25 years with your special human — a gorgeous, funny, courageous, woman who you love more than life itself.
You know that beautiful blue-eyed blonde with a killer smile that you dare to dream about? Well, guess what? You found her and she loves you with a passion and purity that you thought was only reserved for slushy movies and songs.
Even more incredible is that all those years on from that first nervous meeting, your heart will still do a double flip every time your eyes meet hers. Yes, really.
Also, big announcement coming. Congratulations on being the first same sex couple in Lincolnshire to legally marry.
Yes, I hear you. Living in Lincolnshire, not Kent, when the south east is the centre of the universe! Park that geographical bias for a moment and trust me.
And the marriage thing. It is possible to remarry and become Mrs and Mrs now. It seemed impossible for a long time, and still is in some parts of the world, but first civil partnership and then equal marriage. You’ll remember those tears of joy forever.
I’m guessing this is quite a lot to take in right now, but I couldn’t resist spilling the beans.
Without spoiling the surprise too much, be prepared for not one, not two, but three ceremonies to celebrate your union, and Happy 25th anniversary in 2023.
I know, mind blowing, right? If you need to, take a seat and a deep breath. Crazy, but beautifully life changing, epic, awesome crazy. So powerful and so good for soul and body, it should be available for everyone on the NHS.
So, here’s my early wedding present for you/us.
As I know the storyteller in you loves a good same sex tale (even if you prefer to keep that quiet right now), I thought you’d like a sizzling sapphic rundown of what to look forward to on your TV in the years to come.
Oh yeah, and speaking of TVs, soon they’ll be so slim and big, they’ll be hung up like pictures or mirrors and take up half a wall instead of the corner of the room. Your very own cinema screen. Perfect for the film reviewer you've become. You’ll love it!
Anyway, by 2023 there’ll be loads of same sex couples on TV. However, even now, I still think we can do better. It’s so annoying when writers resort to lesbian stereotypes and kill off the dykes when they run out of ideas. Anyway, I digress.
Read on for your gift. I’ve supplied a very cool visual for every year you and your/our love have been together, thanks to an amazing invention called YouTube. I love the fact it was registered on Valentine’s Day, 2005.
For now, you’ll have to wait to enjoy it, so be patient (I know that’s not one of our strong points), keep this letter somewhere safe and come back to it in 26 years’ time. Believe me, it will be worth the wait. She will be worth the wait. Everything will be worth the wait.
In the meantime, enjoy, keep the faith and remember, whatever others may say to you, love wins. Always.
Me
xxxxxxxx
PS I love you and so does Taz. Look out for a karate loving, teddy bear making, fellow journalist with a laugh loud enough to turn heads at the heaviest of heavy metal gigs and please forgive the hair. Trust me, it gets much better. This love’s worth fighting for, so when you find it, cherish it and buckle up for the journey of a lifetime.
