What Phone Does the US Government Use?

The US government does not issue or require employees to use a specific phone brand or model. However, BlackBerry devices used to be very common among government workers. Here are some additional details:

  • In the past, BlackBerry phones were preferred by the government due to their reputation for security and encryption capabilities. Many government employees relied on BlackBerry devices for email access in particular.
  • However, over the last decade, iOS and Android devices have become more approved and utilized in government at all levels - federal, state, and local.
  • For any smartphone usage, the government still requires devices to meet certain security standards like encryption, passwords/pins, remote wipe abilities and more.
  • Government phone usage policies vary by agency. Some provide employees standard smartphone options to select from for convenience.
  • Other agencies allow workers to utilize personal phones but must install a special app or settings to keep data secure in accordance with regulations.

The US government does not issue a specific standard phone across all departments anymore due to the rise of iOS and Android options. But required security is still enforced through apps, settings, and protocols when mobile devices access confidential data and communications. Many government employees now select iPhone, Galaxy, or other common commercial smartphones that can meet these standards.

Do your research and beware of the countries who have the highest rates of scammers. I especially wouldn’t recommend getting a phone from any company that has those middle eastern call centers. I’m American. I use American companies for my protection. But that’s just me.
